Confusion about Test Results

Hi guys,

I recently came across test results from the Whole Product Dynamic test and saw Norton ranked 1st asides from false positives. Norton 2011 and Kaspersky 2012 were test and Norton came up 1st with 99.3%.

But I read this for Kaspersky:

In the test on deleting rootkits and deliberately hidden active (“stealth”) malware, Kaspersky Internet Security 2012 removed 17 of the 18 tested samples (94.4%, while the industry average was 44.4%). The test on blocking new threats distributed via websites and email returned a result of 94.6% (the average - 80.5%). And when scanning more than 300 legitimate programs and files, not one was incorrectly indicated as harmful (i.e., a 100% success rate on false negatives).

In the test on finding malware, the new Kaspersky Lab product found 109,977 out of the total 110,623 samples, that is - 99.4%. The average level for the industry is 98.5%. A 100% success rate was given for detection of the most dangerous menace to users - new (so-called “zero-day”) threats (of which 1752 samples in total were tested). A 100% result was also reached in the test on curing an infected system: Kaspersky Internet Security 2012 successfully deleted all 23 of the malicious programs from the test system.

For Norton 2012

AV-Test also challenged Norton to detect, terminate, and clean up about two dozen active malware samples. It detected them all and successfully removed 95.7 percent of them. The average program in this test detects 95.2 percent, removes the active components for 85.7 percent, and fully removes just 47.6 percent. Norton also detected and removed 87.5 percent of active rootkit samples, compared to an average of 56 percent.

Norton detected 98.87 percent out of almost 150,000 very recent malware samples, beating the current industry average of 97.71 percent. In both on-demand and on-access tests, it detected 100 percent of widespread "WildList" malware. Since all current products detect 100 percent of those samples, this success isn't surprising.

So i'm confused about how Norton beat Kaspersky because Kaspersky had a 99.4% Vs Nortons 98.87.

I'm not sure if I'm reading the results correctly but Norton seems lower than Kasperskys results.
