Constant High CPU usage

Lately I have been receiving numerous warnings from Norton of high CPU usage. They began appearing with programs expected to have high CPU usage, but they have been becoming more frequent. They have begun to include programs which really shouldn't be using  50 to 80% of my CPU, or with low activity on the computer (only a firefox browser, itunes, or some other program is open). I am wondering if I should worry about the high usage because my computer has become very slow and really shouldn't be. I am wondering if there is an underlying problem, such as a faulty program or virus that might be causing the issue. I want to get this resolved before it escalates further.

I would also consider myself  technologically competent and will be able to follow directions if pointed in the right way. Thanks

P.S.. I have included a screenshot of the performance window for Norton for assistance. As you can see at one point in time I received 14 notifications....

I'm running Windows 7 64 bit and getting the High CPU usage notice 3 - 5 times a day.

Hello Alex,

For people that will be checking into the forum may I suggest posting what OS you are running.

It may be helpful to them if you can post the CPU speed as well as the amount of RAM installed.

I have an older system and now with v5 Norton reminds me of this fact with several programs.

Take care,

Hi alexmarrotte,

Can you please try any of the following and tel your inputs,

1. Can you mouse over the graph whereever the CPU usage has shown high in the given snapshot, so that it will list the top 3 process which consumes lot of you CPU.

2. Also, if you decide any of the process which you gonna use frequently and which by default consumes lots of CPU then you can add them in the program exclusion list to avoid getting the notifications further. For adding that,

Go to Settings UI>>Administrative Settings>>Peformance Monitoring>>Program Exclusions>>Configure.

Here you can add any exe which you wish not to get notified for high system usages.

Lastly if you still see the problem please give us your OS details, CPU speed for further investigation.

Thanks,

Ashwini.

I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit on an Intel Core i7 x990 3.47 GHz with 12GB RAM. I get the high cpu usage warning when playing back Finale 2011 files (a music authoring program), When I check the Norton graph, Finale never uses more than 9% of my system resources. The erroneous warnings are annoying. And Nathan, the digital tech, can't figure out what I'm talking about.

Although I have not tested it extensively I have noticed that programs that don't take up a great deal of CPU power (easy to tell on my old rig) will on occasions trigger the high CPU warning if I have another program running that does ordinarily take up a good amount of the CPU. For instance video converting programs or Firefox while on certains web pages.

The only thing I can suggest for the moment is, as has been suggested is to add the known high performance issue programs to the exclusion list and hopefully it will make a difference in the reporting of lower performance programs?
