I received an email "from a friend". The email was blank but there was an attachment which I opened. It was for a Viagra website.
I knew right away this was a virus, having fallen for this scam once before.
I deleted most of my contact list right away.
Sure enough about two weeks later someone used my Hotmail account to send suspicious emails to friends on my contact list. Only a few people got the emails - unlike last time when it was my entire list.
I only found out about it when I got some bounce back emails. None of the bogus emails appeared in my "sent messages" box (unlike last time). Also - I had previously deleted my contact list, but the bad emails were sent to several contacts who weren't even on my list - so the virus had a way of getting into my emails themselves, not just the contact list.
Here is a list of things I have done so far - I want to know if there is anything else I can do.
1. I purchased and downloaded Norton Internet Security 2010 for Mac.
2. I changed my Hotmail password.
3. I spent about an hour on the phone with Norton customer service. The service rep found what he thought was the harmful malware and deleted it. (it was a zip file with a name like "anti-malware" or "anti-virus" or some such. He then scanned my computer and found nothing else that was suspicious.
What else can I do to prevent a recurrence. I would prefer not to change my email account name (plus the people on this board all seem to agree that would not help anyway).
HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
