Best suggestion I can give is uninstall NIS first using Norton Removal Tool

Thanx see what happens .

Than reinstall again

Hi Stu,

Thanks - yeah, figured that might be the only way to go too.

I'm not bothered by a re-installation - but am concerned I can't identify why I needed to do it.  As in - what went wrong and how might I prevent it happening.

I've since reinstalled and CPU utilisation is much better - back to what it was.

Interesting to note - memory utilisation increased a lot - hovering between 750-800 meg (up from a bit below 500after NIS2008 was fully removed.  In case anyone else has noticed, FF 3 seems to be a memory pig.  Each tab puts a noticeable strain on memory usage ... I suspect the program has a memory leak.  If you leave the application open (not doing anything) then memory usitization slowly creeps up (over a couple of hours) near 1 gig.

Since I used the removal tool - I no longer have the antispam / parental add-on and cannot download it either.  I can download a setup file but it won't actually do anything other than tell me "Download already complete".  How nice ... but it does not install the add-on so no prize.

So ... some things *might* be fixed ... new / differnt things (add-on pack) appear not to work.  Anyone have any idea what happened with the antispam / parental control add-on pack?

BTW - I can access email with no problems now (yay.)

NIS 2008 15.5.0.23 (patched to the max) - XP PRO SP 3

The issue does not yet appear resolved ... noticed fluctating memory and CPU utilisation levels (creeeping up slowly) ... will monitor.

Knowing the overall CPU usage is one thing, but having more specific information can provide clues to where the performance problem really lives.

You may want to try downloading and running Process Explorer; with it you can confirm which specific process is running with high CPU.  You can also examine thread performance within the process and possibly identify a specific thread contributing to the high CPU.

If you want to go deeper into troubleshooting, take a look at Process Monitor (procmon).. check out the "related links" on the page for some examples of troubleshooting procedures using this tool.
