When I try to uninstall a program called "Convert Files For Free" a Norton window pops up that says "au.exe is not safe and has been removed"...and the program is never uninstalled. What needs to be done to get this annoying program off my computer?
Shouldn't Norton be able to fix this??
Norton has removed the exe file which it deemed malicious, but there may be remnants of the program still around.
Try running Full Scans with both MalwareBytes and Norton, and let us know how you go.

Ran a full scan using Norton Utilities...it found several problems and "fixed" them all...but the "Convert Files for Free" program is still there and still can not uninstall it.

Norton Utilities is not a malware scanner,,, As already suggested by Guru F4E, you could try running a full scan with the FREE version of Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. You can download it from here:
http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free
Download the free version, save it to your desktop, and update it before running the scan.
