COPY DISK - "clone operating system"

Is it just me, or does GHOST15.0 behave erratically in how it does the COPY MY DISK function.

The first time I tried it, I was just goofing around, peeking and poking the product to see how the thing worked.

I installed a new hard disk.  Let it "initialize" under windows but didn't allocate a partition or logical disk.

The copy disk function did it's job, then the next boot of windows decided I had installed a new member in the BOOT MENU.  I was able to boot either from the existing drive, or the new drive.

So now, the weeks and months have passed figuring out other oddities of GHOST, I decide to do this for real.

I repeated the same process.  Rather, I tried to.

First, GHOST would not recognize that there was a new HD in place until I allocated a primary partition?  WHAT????  After all the advice here to leave the drive un-allocated!!!!

Second, after the process completed Windows did not add a new entry to the boot menu?  I haven't checked the BIOS to see if maybe Windows isn't seeing it because it's not selected as a BOOT source. (I'm not sure that would be the answer anyway..,)  And, GHOST expanded the copied partition/drive to the full capacity of the new disk even though I hadn't selected that option in the copy drive menu.  I did copy the MBR.

Any ideas on these two issues?

Hi, Brian,

The first time I tried the copy disk function to "clone" my operating system disk things worked fine.

The copy function completed.  Both HDs still in the computer.

I rebooted the system to find that Windows now identified TWO functional O/S installs.  Booting up presented me with the START UP menu, giving me the ability to select which drive to boot from.

This most recent time, I thought I had performed the operation with the same options selected (including COPY MBR) and now the second copy of my "C:" drive just appears as another disk.  No new entry in the OS Boot Menu.  I was abel to boot from either disk drive.

After this second copy drive operation, I expected the same behavior as the first time.  Therefore, my comment that maybe somehow GHOST if functioning erratically.

I haven't dis-abled the primary O/S install yet to see if the cloned drive will boot..,

Auburn,

I wish Ghost 15 wouldn't do that. Create a boot menu. Ghost is supposed to be creating an exact copy. Having a boot menu encourages users to do what you did. Boot the clone while the old HD is still installed in the computer. This is breaking cloning Rule #2 and from that point the new HD will not be able to load into Windows after the old HD is removed from the computer. It is a drive letter issue.

When the new OS is booted in the above situation, with both HDs attached, everything looks OK. But, you are really booted into the old Windows although using some components of the new Windows. Dan Goodell describes it as a "schizophrenic" system. It seems your old OS is different from what it used to be. Ghost is behaving differently. Have they gone mad?

Edit.... the cloning rules also apply to Vista/Win7.
