Copying internal hard drive to USB hard drive and back to new internal hard drive

Hi,

I have a Toshiba laptop, running on Windows XP media center edition, and I need more space, so in order to put my old hard drive onto the new one, the only way I can see to do it is through the USB drive and then to the new one. First of all, is this possible?

What I have done is to partition the USB drive and copy the old drive, using Ghost 14, onto a partition, the K drive.  I made the K drive 'active', but can't seem to boot using the K drive. I changed the boot order to boot from 'USB memory' first, but none of that has worked.  Part of the problem I'm seeing is that my computer takes a long time to recognize the USB drive. I have to plug it in after the computer has booted or during the process in order for it to recognize it. Also, when I look at disk management I see the c drive says it's the system drive and maybe the computer can only boot from a C drive (system)?

Excuse me, I know I don't know a whole lot about this stuff. I don't really understand how booting works. I mean, I figured since my whole hard drive was copied directly over to the K drive then it should be bootable?

If anyone out there has the patience to explain this to a novice, I would really appreciate it!
