I wish I could use the removal tool! Unfortunately, my computer won’t boot up so I can’t connect to the internet. Any other thoughts?
Try to install first –> reboot –> uninstall
Recently while in Mexico my laptop crashed and was wiped clean and reloaded with all programs except Norton. It's been working perfectly since then.
I was not comfortable with the antivirus software the Mexican company loaded, so today I chatted with a Norton Tech. and with his help reinstalled Norton Internet Security 2005. It did a complete scan and everything seemed fine. I turned off the computer. Later I turned it on again and now Windows will not boot up 99% of the time. Once it did come up and I tried to uninstall Norton. Half way through the uninstall the computer crashed.
I want to get Norton off my computer. Can anyone help?
I'm sorry Stu. I don't understand how I can do the things you are suggesting when my computer won't get past the second black page which asks me to Press <ESC> to......., then goes to the screen which says Press <F1> to resume. <F10> to Setup. I've tried each of those options and I just get a blinking curser.
The computer does not open Windows at all. Can I do something in DOS to make it open Windows?

Did you really mean 2005 ?
If so it really would be a good idea to update to the current NIS 2008 which is not only faster and less intrusive but also matches modern attacks.
I know you have a probem getting whatever you have off -- make sure the Norton Removal Tool covers your date version?
What version of Windows is on the computer? If you say what make and model it is I may be able to give you a suggestion on how to get somewhat further than the stage you are at but if it's a oldish computer it may be a hard disk failure -- could be on a recent one too alas but at least you may be under warranty then ....
Yes, unfortunately I did mean 2005. Crazy I know, but that's what the tech gave me.
My computer is a HP ZD7000 laptop running Windows XP, recently rebuilt in Mexico and completely up to date as far as I know. I bought it in Feb, 2004 so the warrenty is no good anymore. It doesn't seem right that the thing was working perfectly before I loaded the link they gave me and now I'm dead in the water.

I hope you didn't pay him! Is he within reach so you can get him to put it right?
Are you still in Mexico? Did you buy the laptop originally in Mexico or is it a US version?

I suggest you try this first:
HP Notebook PCs - Notebook Does Not Startup or Boot Displaying a Blank Screen
and see if that helps.
This is the support area for your model on the HP website so you may get more help there but let me know how you get on.
Do you have the recovery disks for it? If so you may be able to use them to do a Repair installation of Windows if that is the problem.
If you don't you might still be able to get them from HP if you have a US model and are in the USA or have a mailing address there but be quick since XP is disappearing .....
I didn't pay him. He gave me a trial version of 2005 Norton Internet Security. I am using my old computer right now and I don't want to take a chance downloading the Norton software to "chat" again. I did respond to the customer survey they sent this morning and explained the problem. We'll see if they respond.
I bought the laptop in the US, then we took it to Mexico with us. While there one of the fans quit so we had the computer fixed and since it was working slowly they wiped and cleaned it up. In doing this they removed Norton. Therefore, when I returned to the US I thought it would be a good idea to reinstall Norton. Wrong!
Anyway, if I could just get the computer to boot up and connect to the internet maybe I could uninstall it.

Please try the procedure in the HP document I linked you to.
If all else fails you could remove the drive from the laptop and patch it into your other computer to recover your data files, if the problem is not in the drive itself.
Depending on how your bios is set up you could download a bootable CD disk image from www.bootdisk.com and see if the laptop will boot up to that but it would depend on whether it is setup in the BIOS to try the CDROM drive. Do you know how to access the BIOS SETUP during the bootup procedure? It vaires with different makes but is DEL on my desktop.
I’ve had to do that and from an online store I got a really neat adapter that will connect any hard drive – 2.5 in, 3.5 in, IDE, SATA – to a USB connection on a computer so that you can access the files.
I meant install 2005 again, reboot, than try to unionstall again

Yabbut .... his computer won't boot up to Windows -- only to a black screen after the F2 / F10 choice keys which he says don't go anywhere .....
Stu wrote:Do you have a repair disk?
Wise to hold back on that until he has tried the HP procedure to deal with one cause of what he describes.
Check back through the thread ....

This sounds more like a hardware issue to me than a Norton problem, like the bios is reacting on a change/malfunction. If Norton were causing the problem you should be able to get into safemode by pressing F8 on startup, but it does not sound like you even get that far.
Disconnect any devices and PC-cards (including network) you have attached to the computer so that it is as clean as possible and try to boot again. If it starts now one of the devices you disconnected is faulty. It can also be a problem with internal components, in that case it might be best if a technician looks at it unless you are experienced with that.
Edit: Hmm, I was a bit quick on the reply. Please check the link posted by huwyngr.
Thanks everyone for your help. I finally gave up and took it to a technician. He’s got the pc now and we’ll see what he says in a few days.
Please try the Norton Removal Tool
