OK.

There have been a number of NIS issues caused by an in-place upgrade from NIS 2009 to NIS 2010 not being as clean as it should have been. The solution for that has been to uninstall NIS 2010 using the Norton Removal Tool that you can get from here.

http://www.symantec.com/norton/support/kb/web_view.jsp?wv_type=public_web&ssfromlink=true&sprt_cid=1a13409b-29db-4397-a286-9dec49f8e252&seg=hho&ct=us&lg=en&docurl=20080828154508EN

Run the tool twice with a reboot between each run.

Note that the removal tool will take out all Norton products on your system.

Go to Program Data and delete the "Norton" directory and the "Norton Installer" directory - you may have to change your folder options to "show hidden files and folders"

Then reinstall NIS 2010 which can be obtained from here

Hi prims,

Welcome to Norton Community!

Check whether IE 8 is set to ALLOW in the Program Rules of Firewall Settings. Then try resetting the IE 8 settings, here are the steps:

1. Start Internet Explorer.
2. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
3. On the Advanced tab, click Reset.
4. In the Reset Internet Explorer Settings dialog box, click Reset to confirm.

Let us know how it goes.

Hi! The latest yogesh_mohan  proposal sorts crash issue ! Tha't s mean that the reason was "Norton Toolbar installation".  I tried twice  to  switchin on/off the crash issue by installing Norton toolbar and resetting the Explorer.

Now it's fine and running without crash BUT now I DO NOT have Norton Toolbar whith his site security warning/advice and Pasword login tool handy.... that's must be fixed by Symantec ASAP

Two more issues :

- I tried fill removal and reinstallation of NIS2010. The problem still exist (crashing of IE 8 during the verifying of downloaded file)

- even more - Firefox crash on start without any choise  to set any parameters to them...

What to do ? if there is any chance to get support from Symantec ???

and something more:

I'm living in Latvia and of course I need a local language support That's mean that I have activated in MS Windows International latvian laguage as active.  I also had purchased with NIS2010 Norton Utilities 14 - and what I got ?? I got message that non-unicode languages are not supported without any warning on purchase process. On result I switched back to 2008 systemworks which are working without any problems with latvian language.

What actually happens ???

It would be wise to unclick the green solution button so that our people know you are still having problems.  This is the link to

customer service chat, in case you want to get a refund for the Norton Utilities, or for customer support.  This is a user to user help forum.  Chat is faster than phone.

Please ensure that the antivirus segment of Systemworks is either not installed or is disabled as that will cause problems with NIS2010.

Do you have any other antivirus scanner running on your system?  That will also cause problems.

I

Hi!

- regarding green mark - I did'nt manage to take away the mark.  Yes- the problem is partly solved by work-around - IE8 reseting and Norton toolbar remowing allows to  work with IE8 BUT - i'm loosing the toolbar and also I found that now I got the problems with firefox.

I would like now mark the issue as unsolved but do not know how...

- I do not have any another antiviruses running and as I wrote  - with NIS2009 I had everything fine...

Go to the post marked as the solution and click on the Options menu on the right hand side of that post.  As the thread originator, you have the ability to mark or unmark any post as the solution to the thread.

I would like you to enable the toolbar but enable only Symantec NCO BHO and not the intrusion prevention. Retest and advise please.

Hi Prims,

As cgoldman suggested try to enable Symantec NCO BHO and not the intrusion prevention.

When you try to disable Norton toolbar in IE8, you are usually asked to disable two add-ons. One is "Symantec NCO BHO" another "Symantec Intrusion prevention". Can you toggle those add-ons a few times and see which one of them causes crash? Try to disable "Intrusion prevention" and see if you can reproduce crash, if you can't then enable it again and try to disable "NCO BHO". Then try to reproduce the crash. Having this info would help us a lot.

Thanks,

Zohreh

Hi!

I  just played with Norton  toolbar on/off in diffrerent combinations:

- I can still confirm the crashing of IE8 with Symantec Intrusion prevention switched on by doing file download

- It is NOT happening with Symantec Intrusion prevention switched off

- there are still crashing Firefox mozilla in any combination

Hi Prims,

Thank you for helping us troubleshooting the issue you have encountered. About the Firefox crash, in order to reproduce it in-house, I have few questions:

1-     In Firefox, does the crash go away, if you disable both of “Norton IPS”, and “Norton Toolbar” add-ons?

2-     What is the version of Firefox you are using?

3-     What are the add-ons you have installed on your Firefox?

4-     Do the crashes in Firefox happen when downloading a file? Or it happens when you are visiting some sites? If it occurs on some specific sites, can you provide the list of them?

Thanks,

Zohreh

FWIW -- Norton have just found a bug causing IE8 not to open:

Re: I just updated to Norton AV 2010 & now I can't open IE Symantec Employee DesiT

so must maybe the two are linked. Desi_T says the fix should be on LiveUpdate tonight (Pacific Time) so maybe the two are linked although this other incident says it's concerned with NAV ....

I expect zoreh_kashani would know.

I am sending you a private messaage. Please look for my message in the top right corner.

summary the story :

I have MS WIndows XP SP3 + lot a software + international settings localised to latvia . Till now I had NIS2009 and latest Norton Utilities working fine.

After the last upgrade:

Norton utilites 14 after rebooting says that they are stop working due to not suporting international codepage. When I set International settings to US , utilities works fine

IE8 crashes while I'm downloding the file in phase when NIS2010 tries to check the file. Working with Toolbar fixes the issue (if I have running only BHO). Diffrent other toolbar setting combinations do not help

without any reaseon crashes Mozilla Firefox (clean installation directly from downloding site) on starting.

In both crashes there are no connections to playing with international settings

I had 2 support session in common 6-7 hours long from Symantec - no results

In total I had 3 times cleaning/removing  of Symantec software by removal tools

I had 4 times full  reinstallation of NIS (removing old in diferent ways (and and without removal tool) and installation of clean NIS2010 copy):

if NIS2010 was taken out - there are no crashes

If NIS2010 are - crashes are back.

as I understand that now we are going to repeat the same issues: remowing and reinstallation fifth time ?

Hi prims

An automatic live update came thru about an hour and a half ago that seems to have fixed the problem that the other user was having regarding a similar issue as yours. This live update was a new Intrusion Prevention update. Please check to see if you received such an update today. If you haven't, please run live update and see if you have received this update. After you receive that new update, please check to see if your problem has been solved also. Thanks.

Hi prims-

If you are still experiencing crash issues following the LiveUpdate described by floplot, please check my private message to you with a request for more information (see the upper right of any Norton Community page for a link to your messages).

What a shame that Symantec did not investigate this issue when I reported it on 15th September 2009. I feel a solution would have been easily forthcoming long before now.
