I can't use the tool as I test malware, though I can see what it does.

Well, Quads, that's what I was getting at... whether, looking at what it does, you thought that the approach would successfully block the malware as it exists today.
Since you don't want to offer an opinion on that, I'll just say that, personally, I don't think it is even working on my system. When I Test it from within the program, I get a message indicating that the protection failed.

Hi Dick. Win7 32bit SP1 & broadband behind a router, 1 computer running in Admin account. I haven't fooled with the program any more. I have no idea if it works or not, or if it is "working" on this computer. I'm not infected or anything, just curious if this program has any merit.
Interestingly, there is also a 'test' module included with the zip file that - when run as Admin - pops up a DOS window that indicates that the protection is working, but from within the program itself it indicates that it isn't working.
Who knows...
A better solution is a good backup routine.
Then your data is protected not only from malware but from hardware problems, windows problems and user errors.

I lost everything, once, since then backup is automatic and continuous. With an image from time to time.
Here's a recent post by Brian Krebs about CryptoLocker and "CryptoPrevent". For whatever reason, it's "working" now on my Computer, and I note that it's gone through several updates since I installed v2.2. Check it out:
