Oh dear. This doesn't sound good. I try very hard when I chat with such engineers to convince them that they should tell me first in a chat window, what they propose to do. I say they should tell me and I will carry out the instructions. That way, I am in control and I know what I am doing and first seek to understand what it is they want to do. Sometimes it is a waste of time, because the engineer must be having several chat sessions , fails to read what I write, and keeps prompting me to confirm a remote control session... which just proves they are sending me standard pre-typed texts.

Anyway, I'm sure some of the "guru's" and other are better able to respond to you. For my part, I would be happy to help to try to save your system and deal with each of your issues in turn. I suspect that the engineer have gone into IE and carried out a Reset. They like to do this but fail to understand the consequences. If you want to try just post back, but in that case I suggest you post version numbers of everything relevant.

For example, Vista Home Premium with or without SP1; Norton 360 version 1 or 2 (and release no), MS Outlook version no.

It's Nortons 360 v 1.3.2.4,  Outlook 2007 and I'm running Vista Home Premium.

As I mentioned, I think the listed errors may only be the tip of the iceberg so a full system restore may be my only option to be able to run a clean system again.

One thought did occur to me though, could it be possible that, with the file association problems, the Outlook data is still there only just not recognized by Outlook? - if you know what I mean

Indeed you may be correct re full restore. I just know how hard that might be; and with Vista trying to make a copy off first and them trying to dump files back after the restore is near impossible because of the way Vista works.

Norton's is now at v2 and I think you could get a free upgrade; however forget that for the moment because that will not fix your issues.

Yes, like you, I do think the first association problems could account for at least two of your issues and I did think whether the pst file might be intact but located in your custom location, whilst a new one created in the default location.  The difficulty I have is whether you adopted standard settings or make custom choices in terms of file locations etc., loosing associations might mean a new pst is created but in the default (rather than the custom) location. The only way is to seach. So first search for all *.pst files.

The default is outlook.pst. Maybe you have two (hopefully); then look at modification dates; make backup of both, and replace the live outlook.pst with the old. Sounds easy.. then it probably is too easy and you are out of luck, and your outlook.pst has been overriden.

Knowing the full version of Outlook is important two e.g. SPI MSO etc. go to Help, about  in Outlook.

I suppose I should mention / question your user settings, i.e. how many user accounts created, and have you/engineer deleted and or recreated the user. This would explain missing stuff for sure.

Let us know how this goes

I've not deleted/changed and settings at all. Everything was working off the default settings for filenames and folders locations, all this just 'happened' immediately after the remote session. I didn't query why the analyst was going into my registry as I thought he must know what th was doing. Never again!!!

Restoring any backups that I have won't resolve the issues with the OS, so I don't think I can win this without restoring the entire system.

I'm at a total loss. It would appear that Nortons protects against everything except it's own analysts!!!

Oh Woe!

I won't say the magic incantation -- restore data from your backups <gdrvvf>

Seriously, I've flagged your message for a Norton Staffer to see -- look for the name in red.

Before you even think of formating and assuming you don't have current backups of your Outlook data files, don't current versions of MS Office have a built-in sort of backup in which they keep a hidden copy of at least the previous version of every data file? If so it might be possible to bring those back. And there are some powerful utilities for recovering deleted files, including freeware.

Anyway I'd suggest not thinking about reformating until you have explored some other options, and Norton might want some file copies to see if they can work out what happened.

David,

I've scheduled to have a representative contact you via email to address your concerns.  Please look for it soon.

The way things are at the moment, I daren't try and restore any backups - at least not until Vista and all my software is back in a useable state again. Totally unrelated since I haven't dare sync since this started, but my Windows Mobile device is now acting up!

It's starting to feel like a Hollywood 'B' Movie, will the toaster attack me next..? Think I'll go sit in the middle of a very large field away from anything electrical for a few weeks! lol

I've received the e-mail, just got to figure out when I'll be available next as I work silly, long hours.

Thanks for your help (and sympathy) guys, I'll post back and keep you updated - if the toaster don't get me first!

Hmm, 2 more issues have reared their ugly heads

I can't set folder options to see hidden files and folders and I cannot create new folders by right-clicking and selecting 'New', the menu there just says <Empty>!!!
