DeepSight Threat/Java requests throttle my Mac

In the past, I've had malware problems on my Mac. These were enabled by Java. Now that Apple disables Java by default, I couldn't be happier. Except on the machine where I installed Symantec. Unfortunately, some tools in Symantec/Norton Internet require Java to run. I consistently reject the constant popups that I interrupt my workflow: "To open Java, you need a Java 6 runtime. Would you like to install one now?"

I get these because Norton's DeepSight Threat List requires Java to run. And Symantec uses all of my computer's resources trying to launch Java over and over until eventually my machine is so severely throttled that I have to shut it down and reboot. Even typing this post right now is a chore, as the response time from keystroke to screen is very squirrely.

I do NOT want to reinstall Java -- a known security threat -- just so that this feature can "protect" my Mac. Is there a workaround, a way to shut down this feature, or do I need to install a different product to protect my Mac?
