Why is it, and Norton is the only defrag program that does this. When defraging a drive using Norton it warns you that it will delete all the Windows Restore Points. Is there any way to get around this?

It sounds like you are referring to Norton Utilities here and not N360.
I don't know why it does that, but I will ask for you post to be moved to the Other Norton Products board where someone might be able to answer that for you.

Yes, Hugh, but N360 does not delete restore points where NU16 does.

Hi Bob,
From what is obvious to those of us who have tried alternate defrag tools not all defraggers are created equal.
From what I have read here, Norton Utilities 15 SpeedDisk = LameDisk, if using Norton Utilities 15 there is a way to prevent its defragger from deleting the restore points (via an optional setting); however such capability does not appear to be included in Norton Utilities 16.
I also read the following on Auslogics website here (under "Trick # 3"):
"Trick #3: Don't lose your system restore points!
Lost system restore points in Windows are a common complaint with people using disk defragmenters on machines running Vista and later Windows versions. What happens is the defrag operation moves files around causing the Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) to create snapshots that overwrite older ones and cause restore points to get deleted. If you have VSS enabled on your hard drive, or if you are not sure if you do, the first thing you should do after installing Auslogics Disk Defrag is go to Program Settings - Algorithms and set the program to defragment in VSS-compatible mode. This prevents excessive growth of the VSS storage area and ensures that your system restore points will remain intact.
Not all defraggers have this option. . . ."
I know that Piriform's Defraggler also requires that a setting be enabled so as to "Stop VSS when defraggmenting NTFS volume" or it too will wipe them out. And although I have also tried IObit's Smart Defrag in the past I do not recall whether it offers a setting or not.
I have not checked for myself whether the built-in Windows defrag also deletes the restore points when run or not (easy enough to check but I have not).
Now as to "Is there any way to get around this?" I don't know (but would like to) if there is a viable solution for the most recent version of Norton Utilities. And I presume for Norton 360 as well.
