Delete old Backup Sets

Is there an efficient way to delete old backup sets? I backup to an external drive and have some old backup sets I want to delete. I am trying to use Manage Backup Sets but it has been deleting a 40 Gb file for over 24 hours and is only one third finished. Also the process is typically taking 100% of my CPU. Can anyone advise a quicker way to clean up old unwanted backup sets?

Deletion should be faster when the backup sets are from External Drive. Usually we face this problem only when the backup sets are present in Online Storage.

 

In the future when you try it again, can you group the backup sets to smaller sizes and then attempt the process of deletion. This should solve the problem
