Deleting existing backup file and creating a fresh one

My Norton 360 backs up my C drive to my D drive. That D drive file is huge because I installed and ran Norton 360 before I had a chance to move some old data files off the C drive and into appropriate storage folders on the D drive. Now I’m seriously considering deleting the backup file on the D drive and then immediately having Norton 360 create a fresh backup. Thoughts? Workarounds? Warnings?

However, it did lead to a second question after I opened the backup UI. The last back up failed because it encountered an encrypted file. This is a text file where I store several passwords. Will Norton refuse to back this up? I suppose I could manually move it to the D drive and access it there when needed. It doesn't have to be on the C drive I don't think.

Hi okieseeker, deleting your backup and recreating it is probably the easiest option, but if you don't want to delete it, you can also just remove individual files from your backup set to make it smaller.  If you want to do that, it is a two step process.  Part 1 is exclude the file from the backup set, and part two is to remove the file from the backup location.

 

Part 1: Go to the backup window and click the "Preview" button at the bottom.  Check the files you want to exclude from the backup set.  Then, once you have checked all the files you want to remove, click the link at the bottom that says "Remove from backup set".  This tells Norton 360 not to copy those files over to the backup location on your D: drive when you run backup.  However, it does not delete the large files that are already in your backup. Thus,

 

Part 2: Now go to the "Where" tab in the backup window and click the "Delete backed up files..." link.  Now in this window, you can select the files you want to delete from the backup set to make its size smaller.

 

So, with those two steps you can delete the large files from the backup set and prevent them from being added again when you run backup in the future.

Yes..Norton will not backup encrypted files.

However backing up of encrypted files will be considered for implementation in the future releases.


So when you back up say 100 files which has almost 10 encrypted files: Back up will fail for those 10 encrypted files and the rest will be successfully backed up.


Please do a manual copy for those encrypted files alone
