I recently started receiving warning messages that my "online storage" has run out and I need to "buy" more. I realized that Norton had been doing backups in the background, transferring files on my computer to some network location. I don't remember being asked to enable this feature. Is this the default? If it is, that is REALLY UPSETTING. I am not happy to find that gigabytes of my data have been transferred to some online site without my permission.
So I have disabled the backups. But now I want the files erased from wherever they've been transferred. I selected "delete previously backed up files". I selected the root of the directory tree that had apparently been automatically backed up. However when it finished (after a LONG while) I realized it had only deleted the files in the root directory. There are lots of files and directories in this tree. Tell me there is a better way to delete all of them than going into every subdirectory and selecting all of the files (a process that takes 10-15 minutes each time).
Also when it's deleting a file a progress bar shows the status of a "transfer". Why is anything being transferred? I just want to delete stuff from this onlne storage location.
We do not automatically configure backup. A user would have to enter the backup configuration UI and at a minimum activate online backup and save. It can be done in just a few steps. However I can offer you a solution on deleting all of the files. As you have already disabled online backup you can now enter "My Computer" and browse the Norton Backup Drive. Navigate into the secure online storage and find the configured backup set. Most likely unless multiple backup sets have been created you will only see one. Right click and press the delete menu item. That will delete all of the files under that backup set.
Let me know if you have any issues with the delete.
I’m using Norton Internet backup, which I’ve been told uses same backup system as Norton 360. Following an with this question of removing files from the backup, is there a way to only remove some of the files or some of the directory?
Many times I create temporary directories for specific project and then delete it when the project is finished and I don’t want those files hanging around in my backup taking time and space. I’ve had this problem in the past that when I restore from a backup I end up with a lot of files I really don’t want or need. Short of this I suppose I could delete the entire backup and redo it occasionally to solve the problem with that would take a lot of computer time and bandwidth.
As Michael said, you should be able to see a drive named ‘Norton Backup Drive’ in an Explorer window. I was able to drill down into that drive and access and delete individual files just like a normal drive. This is assuming Norton Internet Backup adds the drive to the explorer window like Norton 360 does.
If you are using Norton Online Backup, I do not think you will be able to delete individual files. You can delete backup sets, not the individual files.
I think you are correct. I can’t see anything in explorer for Norton Internet Backup lik you get in Norton 360. Hopefully they will add the feature for removing individual files and folders in the future because deleting an entire backup and creating another one is a pain. Since they already have the technology in Norton 360 it seemed like it would be very easy to move it to Norton Internet Security.
