Are you using Norton AntiVirus 2008, and use the “Network Map” feature? This would be a good way to keep tabs on the security of these systems. Is this what you were looking for, or something more in-depth?

Tony,

Thanks for the note.

I have not purchased Norton 2008 specifically. I have a subscription to Norton Anti-Virus, I keep up-to-date on the latest downloads, and I renewed the subscription this year.

I'm unfamiliar with the "Network Map" feature; I do not recall seeing it mentioned during my most recent set of (re-)installs. I'll look into it.

Ideally, I want a feature that will either "ping me" (via email) regularly when something goes wrong so I can look at it or will "ping me" reporting its status so that I'm not necessarily relying on others reporting a problem.

If you have a valid subscription for Norton AntiVirus, you can upgrade to Norton AntiVirus 2008 for free:

http://www.symantec.com/newnav/

The NAV2008 will pick up your existing subscription.Unfortunately, in NAV 2008, there is no emailing functionality for Remote Monitoring.

Tony,

Thanks for the note. I did not realize that I could upgrade for free.

There may be a feature / product opportunity. I suspect that most homes with familiies have one "guru" who takes of all the computers. It would be great if it was easier to monitor all those computers for security.

I've actually figured out a mechanism to send myself email. I've also figured out a way to query the system event log and look for specifica messages. I had just hoped I could simply query Norton and it would tell me it was up.

Thanks for all your help.
