Disable Auto-Protect Grayed Out

Update to the thread: I'm calling BS on this entire "maybe something updated" feltercarb with Boot Time constantly getting set to aggressive without ANY consumer input. I found yet another instance just a bit ago, and have had several more since my last post in this thread. It appears that I may have caught the culprit in the act since I was not away from my PC for an extended period of time before noticing yet again. Boot time scan set to aggressive again. Here are screenshots from what I am seeing as the possible cause, my side at least. I found the below at 12:44 pm today, just a bit ago.

agressive set again May 23 2024 after error reporting.jpg

Checking for anything in Norton history that would possibly cause this to trigger, I found only one instance within the time frame I was away from this device today that is a possibility. Previously, I have not been able to put a time frame with the trigger together as a cause. Although I have suspected Error reporting to be the trigger. The file csdkprod is all over Norton history with the exact same advanced details in every logged instance. Either way this need to STOP happening before my machine or others are rendered not usable. We shouldn't have to restore an image to recover a device because Norton's reporting or otherwise is causing this issue.  Enough is enough already. NORTON FIX THIS!!

Restore Auto-Protect feature if it is grayed out after Norton repairs a threat

Recently I have been having the same problems. A reboot does not work for me either.

Please help.

fwiw ~ my Boot Time Protection is Aggressive.
Usually, a machine Restart returns my Auto-Protect.

Got it, thanks.

Thanks for that info.

All. I have seen the below scenario at least twice this month where auto-protect, removable media scan and boot time protection were all greyed out and had an asterisk next to them. Changing boot time protection to normal, manually running live updates and a reboot cleared it. It hasn't reappeared again thus far. This also happened maybe a year or more ago as well where the findings were, corrupted updates were causing it.

When it's grayed out, is that service inactive, or still active?

Auto-Protect is still active when it's grayed out.

Thanks for the input. Yeah, I have done some installs, so at least I understand a bit better why this occurs. I had not reviewed the Norton Insight. I'm probably still frustrated that there's no indication of this.

Curious, did you recently update/download/install program/s?

fwiw ~ my Auto-Protect may "gray" with an update/download/install file/program that is new & has few users.
Usually, a machine Restart returns my Auto-Protect.
I've got into the habit of checking Auto-Protect status after an update/download/install.
As you know...grayed Auto-Protect + machine Restart has been around long time.

fwiw ~
I've had grayed Auto-Protect events that were easy to resolve.
I've had grayed Auto-Protect events that were stubborn to resolve.
I've had grayed Auto-Protect events that were hard to resolve.

I've had grayed Auto-Protect "easy to resolve" events that sorted with one or two machine Restarts.
I've had grayed Auto-Protect "easy to resolve" events that sorted after clearing Norton History with one or two machine Restarts.
I've had grayed Auto-Protect "easy to resolve" events that sorted after waiting a day or two after one or two machine Restarts.  As if Norton needed more time for Norton Insight and Community Watch to gather/send telemetry.

I've had grayed Auto-Protect "stubborn to resolve" events that seemed to be related to some new/recent file/s on my machine that Norton Insight had not seen before, had not rated or had rated with Low Reputation.  I needed to find and second opinion the file/s that Norton was still chewing on.  For the file/s that I was confident were safe.  I'd opt Norton Insight -> Trust Now against the file/s.  I'd refresh Norton Insight and call Community Watch.

I've had grayed Auto-Protect "hard to resolve" events that were a pita to resolve.

That does work, though not sure if during a time the AP feature is grayed out. I will test and report back on next occurrence.

Norton Autofix: 'We did not find any issues' frown

I'm assuming then, although grayed out, Auto-Protect is still functioning?

After PC reboot, the option is available again. However, at some point, it will be grayed out again.

Try downloading known safe program.
Does Download Intelligence/Insight Notification work?

for example:
CCleaner Free Standard installer

Please run Norton Autofix to detect and repair common problems

Please run Norton LiveUpdate and Restart (not Shut down) machine. Repeat.

Be sure you are using the Restart command. Not Shut down and startup again if you have Windows Fast Startup feature enabled. If you use Windows 8/8.1, 10 or 11, there can be an issue with the Windows Fast Startup feature.. See more information here. (credit peterweb)
