I have Windows 7 Home Premium IE8. An MS article says to disable antivirus to install SP1. How do I disable NIS? Do I just Disable Anti-Virus Auto-Detect and Disable Smart Firewall? Or is there a way to totally disable/turn off the whole program?
Hi JEric,
Do not disable the Smart Firewall. That is not necessary, nor safe (unless you are behind a router) while you are online. You can, however disable Antivirus Auto-Protect by right-clicking the Norton icon in the system tray and making that selection. Just remember to re-enable after installing SP1.
Hi SendOfJive,
No router, I'm on dialup. Not much choice here. I understand that. I kind of wondered about that too. The firewall won't interfer with downloading the SP then?
Only Disable Antivirus Auto-Protect.. Gotcha.
Thanks.
JEric
Since you are on dial upo have you looked to see if you can get the SP1 update on disk? ISTR you can.
Yes -- you can get it Check out this page:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/learn-how-to-install-windows-7-service-pack-1-sp1
and click on the link that just says
You can order a DVD from Microsoft containing SP1. You'll need to choose either the 32-bit or 64-bit version of SP1, depending on whether you're running a 32-bit or 64-bit version of Windows 7. For more information, go to the Microsoft website.
That is probably the full 4100MB file that contains all of the SP1 variants for all system variations and not justt the ones you need that you get when you use Windows Update -- about 400MB from memory.
It's useful to have the full file if you have more than one computer needing update..
Hi Hugh,
I probably should get the CD. I did for XP because it was something like 10 hours!! to download. It doesn't ask for 32 or 64 though, so I guess it determines what I have when I install it.
Thanks.
JEric
When you had XP it effectively would have been 32 bit since although 64 bit XP existed hardly anyone uses it (although we had someone here just the other day who was using XP 64 bit and couldn't install Norton .... which only supports the 32 bit version of XP .... )
I got the XP SPs on disk too, and they came through quickly by express mail ISTR.
Do say how you get on ....
