Disabling Windows Firewall

Hi

I have Norton Internet Security installed. I wish to disable all firewalls. I am able to disable the Norton one but when I try disabling the Windows firewall, it states 'Setting controlled by Norton'.

How do I disable it? It seems I have 2 firewalls running.

Thanks

In Windows 7, when a third-party firewall, such as the Norton firewall, is installed, WIndows relinquishes its control over firewall operations to the third-party.  Until you actually uninstall your Norton product the Windows firewall will be unavailable - you cannot enable it or disable it, no matter whether the Norton firewall is turned off or not.  This is done to prevent conflicts that could result from accidentally having two software firewalls running at the same time.  As long as you have Norton installed, it will be the sole firewall on the system - so disabling it will leave you with no firewall and no way to substitute the Windows firewall.  May I ask why you want to disable your system's firewall?  I assume you are behind a router or hardware firewall - if not, your system will be vulnerable to attack from the internet and studies have shown that you can be infected in only a matter of minutes.  You should never be online without some sort of firewall to protect you.

Hi rodeoz,

Welcome to the Norton Community.

As SendOfJive said, you should not attempt to disable your firewall. You should leave NIS's Smart Firewall ON.

I have seen a problem in the past where one of the Windows 7 firewall profiles was left ON when it should NOT be.

Please see the following post and ensure that Windows 7 firewall reports as OFF in all 3 categories.

Thanks a lot for the reply!!

I had subscribed to an online live cricket streaming website and the 600kbps stream was buffering on a 4 Mbps line. The Admin told me that I should turn off all firewalls. But I guess the problem is with something else!

This is how my firewall profile page looks like. Is everything ok? I took the screenshot when Norton was ON.

Hi rodeoz,

NO, this is NOT how the Windows firewall profiles should look. Did you make changes to this?

From your main NIS user interface window, does it show Smart Firewall ON. Button should be in the left hand position as depicted below. Also what is your version of NIS? You can find this from Support > About.

By the way, please make sure on your main Norton interface. Does it say Norton Antivirus or Norton Internet Security??

If it says Norton Antivirus, then please do "not" turn off your Windows firewall.

You need to have Windows firewall turned OFF and NIS's Smart Firewall turned ON.

From the Windows firewall interface, click on "Windows Firewall Properties". There will be three tabs (Domain, Private and Public). Click each tab in turn and set Firewall state to OFF and click Apply.

After changing to OFF in all 3 tabs, click OK. Once back on the previous screen it should now show all 3 firewall profiles as OFF.

Please let us know how it goes.

By the way, don't listen to anyone who says you should turn ALL firewalls OFF. You should always have one active firewall on your computer and a hardware firewall such as the SPI firewall offered by most routers. But you should NEVER have more than one software firewall active.

Hi rodeoz,

Below is the way the Windows 7 firewall should appear.

Hi rodeoz,

The streaming problem is most likely something other than a firewall issue.  The first possibility is that it is a temporary problem with your ISP.  DNS can also cause issues if it doesn't find the optimal servers for your location.  If you share your internet connection it can slow thing down.  The are a number of reasons you may be seeing a slow stream.

Start by running a speed test on your internet connection.  If everything is working well, you should get a download speed that is slightly less than the 4mbps.  If your speed is significantly slower, the problem may be your internet service provider.

Hi rodeoz,

The firewall may well not be causing the problem you are currently having but if you truly have Norton Internet Security (NIS) and not Norton Antivirus (NAV) then your windows 7 firewall is NOT configured correctly and WILL cause problems at some point - if not now, then later.

With NAV there is no firewall so in that case you should have Windows 7 firewall active.

So as I mentioned before, be sure to double check which Norton product you have before turning the Windows 7 firewall OFF per my earlier procedure.

Your earlier image of the Windows 7 firewall does in fact show that Norton Internet Security is controlling the firewall but please double check this from your Norton product which one you have.

I have never seen a case where ALL 3 Windows 7 firewall profiles is left ON after installing NIS. So this is why I asked if you made changes to the Windows firewall.

Bottom line, once you verify that you do in fact have NIS, then make sure and set all Windows 7 firewall profiles to OFF.

Thanks a lot Allen and Send of Jive!!

I have now been able to turn off Windows Firewall. I have NIS and its inbuilt firewall is active now. So I have only one firewall running!!

Thanks again for all your help guys. Its really appreciated :-)

Hi rodeoz,

Thanks very much for the update. :smileyhappy:

How is it going with your original issue?

Best wishes.
