Disappearing email

The new Windows 7 came with McAfee, which stopped the PC from booting in less than five minutes.  Everything else worked fine.  I took off McAfee and went with Norton Internet Security 2010.  Then, my Thunderbird email started acting wacky, deleting messages from the Inbox automatically (both read and unread), putting some in Trash and just getting rid of others.  I went to LiveMail and it does the same thing.  I've uninstalled and reinstalled.  No luck.  The only different from the machine when it was was working correctly is the removal of McAfe and the installation of Norton.

 

ANY help would be appreciated.

Did you uninstall McAfee using the McAfee removal tool? If not, then you can find the McAfee removal tool and instructions over here - there might still be leftovers of McAfee stuck in the system:

Thanks.  I don’t really remember, but I probably let Norton uninstall McAfee.  I’ll see what I can do about finding anything that may be left behind  — and thanks about getting this to the proper forum, too.

It is never a good idea to let one security program uninstall the other. By all means run the Mc Afee removal tool, and also reinstall NIS 2010. Please do the following:

 

First, save the McAfee removal tool to your desktop (see link in my previous post).

 

Also, save the following to your computer:

Make sure you have got your NIS 2010 product key handy - you can fetch it from your Norton account:

Note: the Norton Removal Tool wipes out all Norton products installed on your machine.

 

Disconnect (by unplugging) from the internet. First, run the McAfee removal tool (twice should do it) and reboot your computer.

 

Then run the Norton Removal Tool (twice) and reboot your computer, then install NIS 2010 again. You will be prompted to connect to the internet when NIS 2010 asks to be activated.

Hi Nittany,

 

McAfee Spamkiller is known to do this.  If this program is on your PC uninstall it.  Norton Internet Security and Thunderbird both have very good antispam features, so the McAfee program is not actually needed, anyway.

Thanks for the help.  I uninstalled Norton, reinstalled McAfee, uninstalled McAfee, reinstalled Norton and – as of now – this seems to have done the trick!

I suspect an infectious file in your mail box that your Norton would have deleted. There are two things that I can recommend. Disable email scanning and see how consistent the emails are coming in
