Disk Space use is huge (27GB) with NIS 2006

Hi

I have a fairly old laptop which came pre-installed with NIS 2006.  I have maintained the subscription on this annually (there are 91 days to go on the current subscription).

I have recently been plagued by a severe lack of disk space on my (modest 80GB) hard drive and had been confused as to what was using so much space until now, when I have discovered that C:\ Program Files \ Common Files \ Symantec Shared \ VirusDefs is 27GB!  Many of the folders within this folder are labelled *.tmp

Can I safely delete these?

Note also that I hoped to upgrade to a newer version of NIS but, when I tried, I was informed that I was ineligible to do so because of the (too cheap presumably) version of NIS which I have been subscribing to.

Since my laptop is generally very well-behaved, I get the impression that Norton is doing the sort of thing that Microsoft appears to like to do in making older versions of Windows so cumbersome with the flood of automatic updates that pretty soon one is forced to abandon the software for a newer version.  (With available disk space of about 70GB after an HP recovery has been taken out of the equation, Windows is using 20GB and NIS 27GB so that with less than 25GB of other stuff I am out of space).

Thanks in advance for any help,

Est1
