DNS Settings how do they work with Norton

Hi

I have Norton was pre installed on my laptop.Had a few issues and Norton on the support have been good.

For some reason my browser would automatically redirect to a dodgy website.a common thing I understand ,although I am not a purveyor of "on line gentleman's relish"

Thought I had a virus but is was not?On line with Norton they set the DNS server settings to preferred 198.153.192.50 and alternative to 198.153.194.50.This as an alternative to obtaining a DNS server address automatically.

My wi fi connection drops out now and then although the rest of the house and gear remains connected some it must lie in the laptop.

So can anyone help please? What I cannot understand is why my browser wants to re direct is there  something on the laptop? Then if I change the DNS settings it will happen again? So how do you find and get rid of whatever it is that is doing it.

Hope that makes sense

thanks

Thanks will look at in the morning. Before I take your suggested action I had already run Norton Power eraser and then Malbites etc. They all found nothing.

The laptop is only 10 days old and have norton live since day one. What I cannot understand  is why if you are correct Nortons on line help did what they did?

And ,as having changed the DNs settings the "problem" has stopped?

Any further help or ideas

thanks

Here's the link so you can see what the different settings are designed to do

I'm very shy of doing to much in the DIY repair of less than expected computer operation. The amount of malware being dumped on us daily is unreal and doing the wrong thing can leave you with a 'landfill hockey puck'

Hi Cockneyrebel,

Were you being redirected to porn sites?  Your DNS was set to Norton ConnectSafe servers that filter out pornography - so it is possible that by doing that, the problem might appear to be solved.  But if malware on the PC was the cause of the redirections, then it would still be there unless tech support also removed it in addition to changing your DNS settings.  I would be inclined to follow dickevans' suggestion to run this by someone at one of the removal forums he mentions just to make sure your PC is clean.

Thanks for that. Now understand (I think). In effect Norton on line support have directed all my Internet traffic via their servers?
So if I had a problem they did not fix it ,they have just “hidden it”
for the 1st few days of having me new laptop Norton did not seem to work right and the 1st time I contacted support they un installed and re installed Norton. They also deleted a Lenovo per installed programme as well ,a finger print log in .
Seems guessing that Norton and Lenovo did not get on.Why else uninstall and reinstall a programme after just a few days.So looks like I am Donald ducked…
Mother’s Day here in the UK so will have to leave it till tomorrow…

Yep was getting redirected to a site [Removed]
Said it was an educational site but the pop ups were requests to have a date.Wouldnt mind but they looked like dogs .
I can only assume the redirects were a result of malware ,if not what else could it be?.
Apart from being a real pain not sure what else Malware creators are trying to achieve?Maybe causing me pain on the laptop is enough for them to get their rocks off.......
The issue is how to find the bugger remove it and feel confident moving forward
Cheers

Hi,
Sorry it had to be malware. The list of free removal sites is still valid. Please work with one of the experts there to get your system cleaned up.

Hi

Been away so sorry for not keeping you posted.

I have run Malwarebytes plus their removal tools, all the sites you kindly provided, plus 3 or 4 others that were  universally recommended

None of them found anything all a clean bill of health.

So being a happy bunnie altered my DNS settings which Norton had set, From 198.153.192.50 and 198.153.194.50 to the auto setting and.................

IT IS STILL THERE open up me web browsers and BINGO off we go to sftwred.or and pctoaster corrupt and the old software education site with pop ups of old boliers looking for a shag

If you just used the tools from the sites without supervision, you probably still have an infection.

You need to sign up to one of the sites and work with ONE of the malware removalists, doing EXACTLY as they say, no more no less, until they tell you your system is clean.
