Do I have a security problem?

I recently installed the free upgrade from NIS 2009 to NIS 2010 in my two computers. One is running on Windows XP and the second one on Windows Vista 32.

Soon after upgrading, I noticed an icon from Windows Security Center in the task bar, warning of a serious security problem. Opening the box, it comes from Security essentials, and shows that both the Windows Fierewall and Malware protection are off.

Clicking on the the details arrow, it further informas that BOTH Windows and Norton report their Firewall is OFF. Clicking on the Turn On button is of no help, neither will turn on.

I already had a live chat with a Norton representative and, after several questions and actions taken, the problem remained unsolved. The Norton representative ended up saying that since all checks on the Norton program showed status ON and OK, the problem could not be from Norton.

It may well be true, but is a little hard to accept it as such, since this is an issue that started just after the 2010 updaqte.

I still remember a similar issue I experienced after I first installed NIS 2009, back in December 2008. Norton would report that Windows firewall was turned on and gave yoiu the option of keeping it that way OR changing it to the Norton Firewall. This was an annoyance I reported and discussed with Norton Support and I assume it must have been eventually resolved by Norton, as I stopped receiving that warning.

Is it likely that we may be here upon a similar situation? Except that, in this case it looks more scary to me, since BOTH firewalls and BOTH Malware protections are reported OFF and, no less important, they cannot be turned ON.

Other points that may be of interest: The issue eventually resolves itself in time (which is still unsettling); and rebooting seems to also resolve it (also quite annoying).

I googled and searched these Norton Forums but did not succeed in finding any report of this problem.

Has anyone ever experienced it? And how was it resolved?

If anyone could provide some help, I would greatly appreciate it. However, I am not a much literate computer user, and any help wold have to come with detailed instructions on how to proceed. Sorry for this additional inconvenience.

Thanks in advance for your help and your patience.

Edited to add that the whole issue only occurs with the computer running on Vista. Apparently, so far, the XP one is running with no apparent issues of any kind. Thought this would be important. Thanks.
