Do I have to turn system restore off?

I would like to suggest that this is not a sensible course of action. Turning off System Restore, causes on some, if not all, operating systems, that restore points are deleted. If a system is infected - and of course much depends on the virus - the user might actually find it safer to return to a previous restore point. At least this clears out infected registry entries. Some virii, as a matter of course, actually turns off system restore, in order to ensure that the user is truly up the creak i.e. that they cannot return to an earlier restore point. One way around is, is for users to use a third party tool that makes backup copies of important system files, and the ability therefore to return to earlier 'points'.

Is it necessary to turn off System Restore prior to performing a scan for virus/malware? Perhaps that is a silly question, but I've heard that type of advice repeated.

It doesn't particularly make much sense to me. The putative reason offered for turning off System Restore is something along the line that otherwise the backup files in use by that program won't be surveilled by a virus or malware scanner. Is that true? Sounds like nonsense to me.

I thought I'd ask here if I do need to turn off System Restore or some other part of Windows before running a Norton 360 scan.

Thank you for the help!

For the curious, here is a link: (http://forums.worldofwarcraft.com/thread.html?topicId=7475813043&sid=1). It's from the World of Warcraft forums, and a poster there by the name of "Thunderchewer" has a post of helpful links regarding account security. Amongst them is the advice concering the need to turn off System Restore.

Turning off System Restore is a step to take only when you think your system has been infected, and when you boot into Safe Mode for the scan. While it is not necessary to disable System Restore every time you perform a scan, it is a more advanced method that would certainly lead to more comprehensive scans.
