Does Norton Internet Security have any PC utilities that defrag you drive/registry etc. or anything or are those just features in Norton 360? Or is it basically just Norton Antivirus with a firewall - no other things added?
I am sking because I found some old messages (2010/2009 or so) referring to those features being in NIS but from reading current product descriptions, it seems for those programs you would need Norton 360 or Norton Utilities - they are not in NIS?
Thanks. That means it is on antivirus also. I have an SSD and would not want that. I have Windows Defragment turned off in services and it will not even come up if you try to run it. Does Norton use Windows Defragment or its own?

Hi, Norton is SSD aware and does not attempt to defrag those drives. You should have no worries nor any problems from that feature.

Norton calls up Windows defrag.....Norton Idle Time Optimizer has On/Off option in product -- Settings > General
If you are operating on Windows 7 it is set by default to automatically defrag all the driives ... I've checked and every time I look it says 0% fragmented for all 9 logical drives ..... And I cross checked so it isn't lying!
For more just type defrag in the START Search box .... and selectdefragment your hard drives..
You can select when you want it to run (default is in the middle of the night and I shut down overnight so I set mine to lunchtime) and you can select a drive and analyse and run manually ..... no pretty moving squares like it used to be however!
I must remember to check Windows 8 but I imagine it would be the same.
I cannot run Defrag (not from Start, not from CMD, and not from properties on my drives.) When I try to run Deframenter, to check status of drives, nothing comes up (same with Start and CMD.) There are no errors or anything, nothing noted in Event Viewer like it was an error not seen on the surface either - simply nothing happens. On my computer, Disk Deframenter is disabled under Services. (I have a Samsung SSD and its Samsung SSD Magician program disabled Defrag, as well as SuperFetch, ReadyBoost and Indexing, as part of its O/S Optimization when I first installed it on my new O/S and computer build.)
So if Norton strictly uses Windows native deframenter, I guess I am safe.
So question:
Are you sure that Norton does not have its own Defragment utility - it solely relies on Windows to do it?
Is it the same for Norton 360 (no built in defragmenter, it uses Windows)? I am paying for Norton Antivirus now but I can get Comcast Norton, which is same as Norton 360 sans the backup storage on Norton's servers (it is the latest version because I have it another PC), for free but I declined to use it on my main computer because I was afraid it might harm my SSD.

Hi,
You might check with user, guru YANK who participates here and on the Comcast forums for the details of their product.
So far as I know all of the Norton products have been coded to disable any attempt to defrag a SSD.

The reason you cannot run Defrag is that you have the service disabled. With the service disabled, no hard drives can be defragged.

But does Norton only use Windows Defrag or does it use its own, that is what I am trying to find out. If it uses Windows, then no worry. If it uses its own, then my concern is if turning it off in the user-menu really turns it off (it could still run.)
Whether using Windows defragger, or a Norton defragger, I believe they both still rely on the Windows Defrag service. That is how Norton would access the API's to do the defragging.

Norton could have its own. For example, Auslogics uses its own, because I use it to manually defragment my HHD data drive and it works even though my Windows Defragementer is disabled in Services but if I try to run Windows Defragmenter nothing happens (I cannot even make it run to check its status, for example)

You cannot run the Windows defragger because you have disabled the service.
