I just bought Norton Security with Backup and have begun installing it on my various devices (a mix of Win XP, Win7, Win8, Android & iOS). I've done the install on my main computer and then used the "add devices" option to send an email to my other machines. The Win7, Win8 and Android installs have gone fine but when I try to go to my XP box, one of two things happens:
- Using Chrome, I'm taken to an almost blank screen (just a Norton logo and the word "SignIn" at the top). If I click SignIn, I get the regular login screen but it keeps complaining that I haven't entered my password (I have and it's correct).
- In IE, I don't even get the "SignIn" but if I go to norton.com/setup, I DO get a signin screen and can login. However, all I see then is a screen that's blank except for the headings HOME, DEVICES, SERVICES, FAMILY and Help. If I go to HOME or DEVICES, I get a "retrieving devices" message that never goes away.
It occured to me that the Norton installation routine might require Java (I uninstalled java from my XP machines as a security precaution when Microsoft discontinued support for XP). I then tried to reinstall Java. I downloaded the JavaSetup8 executable but, when I click it, nothing happens other than showing me an hourglass for a couple of seconds.
These old XP machines are mostly just for file storage or for running some old apps that don't run under the newer versions of Windows. I only go online with them for various software updates but I still like to keep them protected. Is there a way to get the new Norton Security package on these machines or should I just switch over to something like AVG Free for a basic level of protection on these?
Thanks for any help that anyone can provide.
