Does smart Firewal automatically block unsolicited incoming traffic

"Wininit EXE is a core process that is present in each Vista session. Wininit EXE's job is to start some of the main Vista background services (programs) like Service Central Manager (SCM), the Local Security Authority Subsystem (LSASS) and the Local Session Manager (LSM.EXE). Wininit EXE is a critical Windows Vista background program that should never be stopped through the Vista Task Manager system."

This would indicate to me that it loads before Norton and therefore not logged unless it is required after Norton loads.

It is logged for me on every boot.

So would I be correct to assume that
1. wininit.exe is required to run before when can log on to the computer?

2. that if my wininit.exe was not running properly that I would have many difficulties and probably not be able to use my PC?

Also, Bombastus, do you see lsass.exe in your firewall logs at startup? I do not see that in mine.

Guess what I'm thinking is that wininit.exe must be running when I start up my computer even if it does not show up in the firewall logs

Because if lsass.exe is started by wininit.exe right? And isn't lsass.exe partly responsible for the different accounts one has on their computer? Like I have an admin account and a user account. So isn't the logging into one of these accounts handles by lsass.exe? And I'm able to log into both of these accounts, so wouldn't that mean wininit.exe is working despite not showing in the firewall logs?

It will only show up in the firewall logs if it has requested internet access.  Have you looked in Task Manager?

Thanks SoJ
So there really isn’t a reason for wininit.exe to access the internet everytime one starts there computer, is there?

And yes, I see wininit.exe in my task manager, so that means it does get started upon turning on my pc, eh?

Hi Calls,

You really should stop trying to second guess the operation of NIS and your computer. If there is a problem NIS will alert you to it. :smileyhappy:

Best wishes.

Allen

so on the whole wininit.exe thing, and if it should show in firewall logs or not, it really doesn’t matter does it?

and as long it (wininit.exe) shows in task manager, then all is cool right?

meaning wininit.exe not showing in firewall/Network connection logs at computer start up,
it doesn’t really matter, right?

No, especially since you can't rely on the boot logging in NIS 2010, because it omits a lot of early things. This was fixed in NIS 2011.

Obviously it loads if it shows in task manager, and your computer wouldn't work if it didn't, so don't worry about that.
