Does someone have remote access to my computer?

Hi, everyone. I am wondering whether someone has remote access to my computer.

Sometimes when I put the computer on standby and come back to it after a while and try to turn the computer off it says that someone else is logged on.

I have checked task manager, and it says I am the only person logged on. But last night something kind of funny happened -- for a split second I saw this image of running water, like a stream, on my monitor, and that's not my background image. I don't know how that could have happened.

I am using Windows XP.

Thank you,

p.

Also, this morning was one of the times that it has said that someone else is logged on, so it was that in combination with the image on my screen last night that made me post this.

Does it occur even without standby - when you directly turn off?

Thank you for your response, Bolean. No, it just happens when I use standby. But last night was the first time I saw an image flash on my monitor like that.

I'm also the only user on the computer, and there is only one user account.

Nobody would bother himself set a personal background.

Thank you, Bolean. It's not that someone set a personal background, though; it was just an image of a mountain stream that suddenly flashed on my computer.

Well, as we know nobody can say that he is only one user of his computer… Sorry, can’t help you.

It's probably nothing. I just thought I should check on it. Thanks, Bolean.

If you're asking to see who's connected to your PC, search for 'command prompt' in your start menu and pull it up. Now type in 'netstat'. That'll display all the stuff that's connected to your computer.

I didn't know that this would fall under the "malware" category -- I don't know too much about this stuff -- but now that you tell me it makes sense. But would it be okay to continue here since we already began?

I went to the start menu and clicked "run" and then typed in "command prompt." Is that right so far? I didn't know a way to search other than by clicking "run." But then when I typed in "netstat" it said that netstat is not a recognizable internal or external command. I'm also not sure what to look for after that.

... try this

Go to start /run. Type in there "CMD" without "' to open command prompt window.
When cmd open type netstat

That seems to have worked. When I did that, I got a list with my name alternating with "TIME WAIT" in the left-hand column and a lot of other stuff on the right. I don't know how to interpret any of that, but the only thing that looked perhaps unusual to me is that it said "foreign address" above the right-hand column. Is there any thing in particular I should be looking for there?

I am not sure if I have noticed any other unusual behavior. I may have, or it may have just been my computer. When I was visiting one site, something kind of wierd happened not long ago. It did look as though something seized a Word document and began scrolling down it, but it may have been just some glitch (it was reputable website, according to Norton). Occasionally the cursor goes a little haywire and the computer freezes, but that just may be my relatively old computer.

I first tried chatting with Norton Support about this, but the guy said it was "impossible" that someone could use my computer without my permission, and I wasn't sure that was right, so I came here.
