I was reading an identical link in the forum about this and it went 2 pages without any answers and then it seemed to be closed as I was unable to hitchike on the thread . @ pages and not one answer with substance? Is anyone working here at Norton? I also am running Windows 7x64 which seems to be the culprit. The icon doubles on boot about half the time. I went into customize and clicked hide on one of them and it did leave the tray, but I'm sure that is not the answer. This is a bug and hopefully one of the Mods has addressed this issue with the techs at Norton. If you have an answer feel free to guide me but please don't ask a bunch of repetitive questions. Thank you.

Clearing the system tray notification cache has always cured the problem for me:
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/13102-notification-area-icons-reset.html
The only bit extra I'd add to the instructions is that after running the bat file, there is no Taskbar and therefore no way to restart Windows. The way to overcome that is to press CTRL+ALT+Del. This brings up a screen with a Shutdown/Restart button at the right-hand lower corner. Use that to restart the computer.
It's worth reading the posts subsequent to the instructions. I notice CCleaner includes an option to clear the tray notification cache.
That certainly needed to be done anyway, whether it works or not on the issue of the double NIS2012. Thanks for the advice.
I ended up in Chat support and they told me to download a rNr app and run it but as you can see below I chose to try the simplest way first and just flush the tray. I did that and it sure came up thinner. Now if that doesn't work and I end up with more double icons down the line I'll just run this rNr and see what that brings. Are you familiar with this app? I think it uninstalls and reinstalls the Norton Suite. Am I right on that. If not please clarify and tell me if I need to dig deeper.

Most times we have to ask questions, so we can eliminate some variables with an issue.
What Norton product and version are you using? Support - About.
Try clicking on Support - Get Support to run Autofix to check your installation and fix what it finds.
Have you run LiveUpdate manually a few times, rebooting as necessary, until no updates are available?

As you can see I left a reply for you below. I should have used quote for both of your replies but it's still early here .
Hi julio,99,
The Norton Remove and Reinstall Tool can be found here .
Please note the following information is stated prior to stating the tool:
The Norton Remove & Reinstall tool uninstalls all Norton products from your computer, and reinstalls the latest version of your Norton security product. If you already have the latest version of Norton AntiVirus, Norton Internet Security, or Norton 360, the Norton Remove & Reinstall tool reinstalls the same version of the Norton security product on your computer.
Apart from the Norton security products, if you have any other utility products like Norton System Works, Norton Ghost, pcAnywhere, or Norton Utilities, you have to reinstall them manually. Before you proceed, make sure that you have the installation CDs or the downloaded installation files of those products. If you have Norton Online Backup or Norton Safety Minder, you can redownload them from the Norton Web site. For more information on redownloading your other Norton products.
It appears you are running NIS 2012, running this tool will upgrade you to NIS 2013, and if you use ID Safe, you may lose your Local Vault. I have not heard if the NrNt removes the local vault or not if it performs and upgrade. I do know that a clean install when upgrading does wipe out the local vault, but anover install does not.
To be safe, if you use ID Safe for you passwords, I would export the ID Safe data prior to doing anything.

Thank you. I now have 2013 installed so I guess that is the one I'll get.
I've had the double icon problem a few times, usually after a major update of NIS. Using the .bat file has worked. Perhaps there's no need to look further when it happens.

I ran the .bat file and it worked. Can I ask you if you're running NIS2012 and if you are have you updated to 2013 yet? I did and I was wondering what you thought of the newer version, even though there's not a whole lot of surprises. I like the old interface better, but that's just me.
Sorry for the delay in reply. I have installed NIS 2013 and don't mind the new interface.
However, the Tray icon being slow to appear worries me. I realise this is just the icon not showing rather than the service not running but a few times, the icon has had a red cross on it instead of a green tick. Although I haven't thought to look at Task Manager when this happens, the red cross suggests that the service isn't running at that time.
Both situations sort themselves out after a delay but I've decided to use a different program until this is sorted out. I have a few system disk images stored on a second internal hard drive, so it is easy for me to switch between a system with NIS installed on it and a system with a different security product.
Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit.

This is great. Another multi security user like myself. Not that I use them at the same time, but I have a friend that tells me I change security suites more than I change my boxers. Not true, but I like to give the good ones all a try until I settle into one for a while, which brings me to the next question if you don't mind. Which product are you alternating? I've tried just about all the major ones for at least 6 months to see how they worked. I also layer MBAM with most suites for an extra scanner. I find it good at finding Trojans that others might miss. I didn't have a problem with NIS2013 at all. Loaded well and is running (so far) like a top.
