Recovering Data from Cloud.
Had repair carried out on PC which resulted in the HDD being removed unnecessarily, hence losing all data, and disc destroyed by repairer.
Not being totally conversant with the workings, I set about reinstalling data from Cloud, blissfully unaware I had to reinstall MS Office Lifetime 2016.
Did reinstall MS Office 2016 but upon recovering data from Cloud, found some data was missing. Checking data held, I found there were in fact 7 segments (covering 3 previous PC’s which seem to indicate last dates of updating. Opting for most recent dates (i.e 2024) some docs were not shown, although they had been regularly backed up to Cloud.
Did contact Microsoft, who saw no problem in reinstalling MS Office 2016 Lifetime, although I have read somewhere the 2016 version is now 365 ?
Is there a possibility that because of the change, and possibly because the 2016 version has been reinstalled more than once, it no longer works. That being the case would a new 365 version enable access from Norton Cloud without issue ??
Whilst this is technically an MS issue, the original problem was gaining access from Cloud.
Would appreciate any observations etc.
Apologies for the length, and lack of tech know how.
Have had Norton for 20 years, but 1st time I have had to download from cloud as all previous have been carried out by the dealership.
Thanks

Hello Devrod. I’m a bit confused about the data you are trying to recover and where you are recovering that data from. Are you referring to Norton backup’s in the cloud and are trying to recover documents, messages, photos, etc.? Follow this guide, pay close attention to step #5. You can chose NOT to download the files in the backup sets to their original location as that is what has changed. Download to a separate folder/drive. Review the files there to determine what you have and don’t have.
As for Office 2016 it is still supported by Microsoft. Reinstalling it, Windows Updates should give you updates for it if you have “Receive updates for other Microsoft products when you update Windows” checked in Windows update settings. Here is how to manually run updates on your Office 2016 installation to get it back to its most current security state:
Answering one of your questions, Office 2016 and other versions get their updates from Office 365 site. They can also, be used with an Office 365 subscription. Below is the lifetime version I use and where the manual update radio button is located:
Hi, Thank you for your reply and patience, and detailed info… Also apologies for the delay. The latter being due to the repairer being extremely unhelpful.
However, an attempt to clarify :- Firstly, on delving through the records, I have discovered MS Office is "Home and Student 2016, and not as previously advised. by retailer.
I note a week ago a post appeared on this platform regarding recovering data from Cloud, and raising similar issues. It was noted in reply that Norton cloud does NOT reinstall as data was previously set out on MS Office.
I also noted data should be D/L to a folder and sub divided later.
This being the case, can such files be 'dragged an dropped " into MS Office, notably XL.
The other issue being, Checking Cloud I have seven segments, which relate to previous PC’s . Before sending my existing PC for repair, I ensured ALL data had been updated, and as expected, a date is shewn on the segment. However, a particular spreadsheet, can only display up to 2018 (when PC was changed) although it has been regularly backed up since 2018.
The fact dates are shown on 2 segments (all 2024) there is no trace of the one spreadsheet with current info. Does this mean that older segments may not show last back up date ?
Apologies for length of post, but I am getting rather frustrated at not being able to continue with updating essential docs etc.
Please bear in mind I am of senior years, so advanced technology is not always within my reach.
