Downloaded update and now I can't access the Internet or email

This morning, my Internet access and email was working fine.   Then Live Update said an update was ready.  I downloaded it and rebooted as always.  Now I cannot access the Internet or my email.  I checked my other PC and the internet is working fine on that, so it is definitely the Norton update that screwed everything up.  I tried turning Norton off, but still the Internet wouldn't work.  So I completely uninstalled Norton and rebooted.  I still cannot access the Internet.

 

Can anyone please help me?  I have no idea what to do from here and cannot find a phone number anywhere for Norton.

I think it's all fixed now (five hours later). 

 

I guess with the new update from Norton that Norton + ZoneAlarm = Disaster

 

Norton and ZoneAlarm have always worked well together before but after today's update they don't play nicely anymore.

Than you were lucky. Norton & ZA never work pretty well.

What is your set up now?

If you have ZA and XP the culprit may had been Windows Update instead of Norton.  There are reports that the XP KB951748 update that was issued yesterday caused ZA not to connect to the internet.  The workaround is setting the internet zone security to medium instead of high.

 

Like Stu I am surprised ZA works with Norton, lol.

When you say LiveUpdate you mean in Norton?

 

Did you also get Windows Updates today? If so there is one that is known to kill ZoneAlarm and stop all internet connections.

 

Check the ZA forums or Google!

 

Get rid of ZA -- more than one firewall is not good practive although a hardware and a software can be OK although some say superfluous, although I don't agree with them on that.

I fixed it by uninstalling Norton and uninstalling ZA and then re-installing Norton.

Thanks -- I just suggested that to someone else so I'm glad to have the confirmation.

 

I presume ti was not Liveupdate that caused it but Windows Update.

I’m guessing that the notification he got that “updates were ready for download” was from Window’s Update, Norton just installs them automatically after downloading from Live Update.

What version are you running? Is it the latest?
