Hi  Mel,

Thanks for the suggestion.  Unfortunately my **bleep** computer will not let me access safe mode!  Just like it won't let me access anything in the control panel.  Looks like I might have to reformat.

Cheers

John

Than please try this

Hi,

When I turned on my computer yesterday Windows started to load and then the following message appeared. Userinit.exe

"Application failed to initialise property OXC0000005.  (This message appears twice) and my desktop is blank.  By pressing Ctrl Alt Del I was able to access  Task Manager  to run explorer and access the net. About eight "could not initialize properly"  messages pop up about Rundll32.exe.  I have run Spybot Search and Destroy and Nortons Anti Virus.  Spybot located two items which I have deleted and Nortons did not find anything.   I am unable to Update Nortons Anti Virus (I have tried Live Update and also Intelligent Update) and they both indicate that I have the latest definitions installed but this is not the case and I have now found that latest definition download was in April.  I can access the Control Panel but  I cannot activate any of the contents.

My Norton AntiVirus history indicates that I have downloaded the Above virus.

Can anyone please help.

Cheers

John

Hi again Mel,

Forgot to mention I downloaded Nortons Security Scan.  Ran both programs.  Scan showed that I was using current virus definitions (this is not so according to my Nortons history which shows my last definition download as April 2008) and also indicated that the computer was safe and free from any known viruses.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Cheers

Hi Stu,

Can you tell me how to disable System Restore.  I saw those instructions on Norton Website,  but although I can access my control panel computer will not let me activate anything in the control panel.

Is this helpfull?

http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/en-US/help/9f6d755a-74bb-4a7d-a625-d762dd8e79e51033.mspx

Or is that the part which is not working?

Hi Stu

Yeah that's the part that's not working.  Can't get into Safe Mode and Can't get into anything from Control Panel.  Do you think I should reformat?  Ouch!

Cheers

John

I don't know if you saw this link in the Removal Instructions, but it might be helpful:

Hi Tony,

Thanks and yes I did see that one.  Nothing I tried seemed to work so better safe than sorry.  I am reformating.

Cheers

Ok derfel, thanx for the update

hi John - if you've already tried a safe mode scan (and I'd recommend download Intelligent Updater and installing that in safe mode), you might give the steps in this doc a try:
