I will be installing new Norton product tonight. Current product is 2 years old so I need to uninstall it. I will also need to use the NRT. I have an admin account and a limited user account on my PC.
If I download the NRT to the desktop while on the limited user account, will it alos be on the desktop when logged in as admin account? Or do I need to download it to desktop on the admin account
(I am assuming that in order to uninstal and install, I'll need to be logged on through admin account)
also- when doing the initial updating to the new product, do I have to do that logged on as the admin account?
With my older product, I could get up dates when logged on through the user account

What's teh actual Version ID? It's in Help / About in the format nn.nn.nn.nnn
I'm not sure whether it is desirable to use NRT if they are 2009 or not and we have had some reports of actual problems caused by using it when installing NIS/NAV2010 or 2011 that do not occur when you just let the new version do the uninstalling.
If you are planning to install the current 2011 version it's uninstaller is much more intelligent we are told and personally I would let it install on top of your 2009 (?) or later version and if everything is OK then that's fine. If you then have a problem you can use the NRT and reinstall.
Especially true if you have any other Norton products installed since NRT will install them.
Don't forget for safety to export a copy of your Identity Safe if you use that and note that some of your settings like exclusions may not be transferred.
You could download the Norton removal tool at http://www.norton.com/nrt. But to avoid any problems seen on this forums, run the removal tool AFTER uninstalling your Norton product conventionally (through add or remove or all programs and restarting.) Also make sure to run the tool at least twice and restarting after each run. Make sure the internet is disconnected until AFTER install your new Norton product. Since you did not mention what Norton product you would be upgrading, I’ve included the link to the most popular product, Norton Internet Security (http://www.Norton.com/nis11) and Norton AntiVirus (http://www.Norton/nav11). Make sure you download the correct installer as well as the Norton Removal Tool then physically disconnect yourself from the internet. Plus, all uninstallation and installation of softwares is recommended to be run from the admin account.
I assume you have Norton AntiVirus 2008. Below are the steps to upgrade the software: 1. Log into your admin account and download Norton Removal Tool from http:/www.Norton.com/nrt and Norton AntiVirus 2011 from http://www.Norton.com/nav11. 2. (Does antiVirus have identity safe? If so back that up.) Physically disconnect your self from the internet by either yanking out the cable or switching off the wireless switch. Confirm that you are really offline by opening your internet browser. 3. Go to add or remove program and uninstall your 2008 AntiVirus according to instructions. Let it restart. 4. After restarting go back into the add/remove program uninstall Norton LiveUpdate, LiveUpdate notifications, and any other references to Symantec (assuming you have no other Symantec products). Restart. 5. Run the Norton Removal Tool. Restart. Then rerun the tool again (just to make sure. Restart one last time. 6. Run the Norton installer you download in step 1. If you are using vista and above, right click the installer and select run as admin. Say yes to the resulting window. 7. Connect your self to the internet by reversing what you did in step 2. Run LiveUpdate repeatedly until it reports nothing to install. Please be aware, the first update may be up to 87 mb. Please note this is the normal english version (not the netbook one). If you are using the netbook version please say. Be sure to report back if your are successful with your installation or is facing problems. Enjoy the protection of Norton AntiVirus 2011. If you face any future problems, you could always contact Norton through one support or at this forum.
Calls is also going from NAV to NIS, so the use of the removal tool is recommended and also because of going from 2008 product to 2010 or 2011. Use the control panel removal first of all Symantec or Norton products listed there including live update module if it's listed there and then reboot after removing using the control panel method first.
Also, please be aware that Norton AntiVirus does not come with safe web that shows whether sites are dangerous or not. You also may want to install Norton DNS (http://NortonDNS.com) as another line of defense. Please note I’m using a K800i to help you so I had to multipost. Also the texts may be stringed into one long paragraph.
I currently have NAV2008 for the next 6 hours or so
Version 15.0.0.58
Thanks for the details.
I suggest that you stick with the advice from floplot who has long experience with the procedures and is up to date with background information on the Norton Removal Tool and on upgrading.
