Help please anyone?
Long Story Short - I seem to have an invisible file of 282 bytes in my Downloads folder.
Long Story Long:
First, Advanced Uninstaller Pro:
1. I had a stubborn program that just wouldn't uninstall via Control Panel.
2. Frustrated, after agonizing, I downloaded Advanced Uninstaller Pro from CNet, un-selecting the 'sponsored' downloads.
3. I ran Advanced Uninstaller Pro. (It didn't uninstall the stubborn program, I managed that myself later - another story).
4. So, I uninstalled Advanced Uninstaller Pro.
Then, the MBAM detection:
5. Soon after, I ran MBAM. It found PUP.Optional.OpenCandy malware (and I’d noticed the words “OpenCandy” in the EULA for Advanced Uninstaller Pro ) and quarantined it.
6. I then deleted PUP.Optional.OpenCandy from MBAM quarantine.
Then, AdwCleaner:
7. Next, after reading about removing PUP.Optional.OpenCandy online, I downloaded AdwCleaner (from ToolsLib) to go after residuals MBAM hadn't removed.
8. I ran it (without disabling Norton or MBAM). It found some locations which I manually checked and found they contained folders from the Advanced Uninstaller Pro download.
9. I let AdwCleaner remove them and kept the log.
10. SIDE-COMMENT: I believe I was using genuine AdwCleaner (even though it was from ToolsLib) since Norton and WOT pronounced their site clean and (after the AdwCleaner scan) it didn't ask me to "upgrade for $59.99" or anything similar.
11. I checked Control Panel for AdwCleaner (to uninstall it), then remembered AdwCleaner had an Uninstall button. I double clicked on the AdwCleaner app to uninstall it using this button.
12. After a few moments of nothing happening, the app disappeared and a box-alert from Norton 360 suddenly appeared alerting of High Threats and insisting I attend to them.
Then, Norton-Quarantining:
13. I manually Norton-quarantined twelve threats including the AdwCleaner app (adwcleaner_5.004.exe). I’m presently assuming the other threats were the files AdwCleaner might have put in its own quarantine. They remain in Norton Quarantine.
14. I ran subsequent Norton and MBAM (full-system) scans which reported clean.
Finally, The Downloads folder:
15. Later still, I noticed my "Downloads" folder, although empty to look inside, it showed on its Properties "Size: 282 bytes; Contains: 1 files, no folders".
16. Opening the Downloads folder (in Windows Explorer), I ticked (show) Hidden Files but no hidden file was revealed.
17. I searched the Downloads folder (I thought) for the string “C:\Users\Username\Downloads”, with the settings: ‘Search Tools > Advanced Options > System files’ (which revealed nothing in the Downloads folder).
18. I again searched the Downloads folder (I thought) for the string “C:\Users\Username\Downloads”, this time with the settings ‘Search Tools > Advanced Options > System files + File contents’ (This listed nine additional items – all of interest – but none (according to their Properties) located in Downloads, and all too large in size for any to be the mystery file).
19. Hence, I’m puzzled as to how (see 17 and 18) I could search the Downloads folder but discover items located elsewhere.
Well, that’s it. Anyone able to identify what the invisible mystery file might be? How to get rid of it, assuming it doesn’t need to be there?
Many thanks
