Drive B: Other error

My Norton 360 has said for a while that my disk needs to be optimized, so whenever I do try and do that it ends immediately and says "Drive B: Other error"! Any help for me? Also on my HP laptop I don't know if this is part of it but my HP assistant can't download any updates for my laptop, as it can't set a restore point. I just wanted to let you know about that problems as well if it was connected.

Let us know the version of Norton 360 you use and your Operating System. You may try the solution mentioned here:

Interesting Harry -- not something I remembered even tho' I was in that thread with the same suggestion as here!

I see that thread has been closed as old but that there were some apparently unresolved problem users.

OK so my laptop is the HP Pavillion g7 Notebook PC and the Product number is LK871EA#ABU When i try to check the warranty, t says that that either the product or serial number is either invaild or missing but it shows them both on the screen, Is that a bad thing? Also I have seen Yogesh's fix before but when I go to the WMI and try to click stop the options are ghosted out and un clickable. My Norton version is 5.2.0.13. I am using Windows 7 Home premium and have a 64 bit operating system. Thanks for your help and quick response!

Fabian,

Do you have admin rights for your Windows Login?

Does it shows WMI service as started/automatic or disabled?

Can you try upgrading to latest version- Norton 360 Version 6.0?

http://updatecenter.norton.com/?NUCLANG=en

Thanks,

HarryP

I do now have admin rights for my laptop (finally), but I still cannot do anything with the Windows Management Instrumentation, also it shows it as started. As my Mum thinks that upgrading to version 6.0 of Norton 360 will cost money, just to make sure will it cost money as we already have a subscription with Norton 360 for another 207 from now (17th Febuary).

Fabian

Also we have family over and my cousins are staying in my room so I might not be able to read your reply till tomorrow, just to let you know that I haven't forgotten about you!

fab,

<< As my Mum thinks that upgrading to version 6.0 of Norton 360 will cost money >>

Don't tell her but just for once Mum is wrong .... as long as you have a valid subscription there is no cost for the upgrade to V6 and when you come to renew when those 207 days are about to run out, it won't cost you any different to renew whether you are on V5 or V6 ......

If you plan to upgrade let us know since, in case there's a glitch in your presneet installation, it may be a good idea to use the new Norton Remove & Reisntall Tool that does just that but will download the current (V6) from your MyNortonAccount, already activated.

If you use Identity Safe it would be a good idea to export your data from it to a safe place just in case it doesn't transfer as it should.

Fabian

According to the HP web site those laptops come with Norton Internet Secuity installed. How did you remove that before you installed the N 360 you are now using? Or did you just install it on top of NIS ?

On thee warranty I would advise you to contact HP Support and sort out the discrepency before you need to invoke the warranty!

If you go to the HP general page for the Pavillion G7 series and scroll down to the very bottom you will see a group of links to HP Support:

HP Product Support

» Drivers

» Manuals

» Online support

» Chat with support

» Email support

» Support forum

and a phone number : 1 (800) 474-6836

Note that those are not active links here.

Hope you get that resolved too.

I am right now chatting to a HP specialist on my problem, thanks for that link! Also if I uninstall my Norton 360: Will my subscription on this laptop end, and how would I download V6 on this subscription?

Great -- hope they help you sort it out. Please let us know the outcome.

Just uninstalling N 360 does not stop the activation in itself nor does it stop the clock counting down the days (that is set by the first activation date) BUT if you contact Norton OnLineSupport they will free up the activation if say you end up with a new laptop from HP.

You can download the current version (V6) of Norton 360 just by logging into your online MyNortonAccount and clicking on the Download button .... and it comes down ready activated. Or you can contact us and we can give you a link including if you should want to do so one for V5.

Just remember to uninstall whatever security application is on the laptop when you go to reinstall N 360.

Farian,

I don't have answers for some of your questions but I do know that the number you listed is the model number of that computer and not the serial number. HP serial numbers are usually LLLNNNNLLL and hidden under the battery.

The current version of 360 is 6.0.1.2. You might want to upgrade, it's free.

Hope this helps

Dick,

I don't think that is the HP model number since typically it would be something like" HP Pavilion g7-1054sa Notebook PC

HP Have 3 identifiers on their lable just to help the user!

capture_02182012_213540.jpg

and Item 1 is the useful one for product support and downloads. The others come in on warranty and live support contacts or identifying a spare part.

I'm not sure but Fabian's machine may not be a US product?

Hugh,

You're correct. My bad. It's a part number as shown by yor example.

I see part numbeers/model numbers every day being submitted as serial numbers. I do get them mixed upon occasion. :smileysurprised:

Well guys, I'm going to have to system restore my laptop apparently to get the HP Support Assistant working... What a pain that will be, but at least I don't do any of my homework on this computer as it hasn't got Microsoft Word or anything like that. I'll give you an update as to what happens afterwards. Also my laptop is English I belive so I'll update you on that as well.

EDIT: I have found the product KEY, and it was on the bottom of my laptop and it is in the format of XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX

Hi,

Be sure you have the correct one. The product key for your operating system has the same alphanumeric format of five sets of five characters.

When I tried to use the Remove & Reinstall tool it said after it had removed most of Norton 360 that there was an unrecoverable error had occurred. Then it gave me a link as to how to uninstall and reinstall it manually. Any insight into that?

So I have now downloaded the Norton Remover Tool twice and the first time when I tried to run it, it wouldn't work, then the second time I ran it, it removed my Norton. Success! So I've now reinstalled Norton and I've gotten the newest update and I ran a full system scan just to see if it was working properly and it was. But when I did the tasks e.g. registery clean up and disk optimization but the disk optimization still isn't working! Any new ideas?

Check whether the defragmentation from Windows works and let us know the results. Click the Start button, then click All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Defragmenter. Then click Defragment Now.

Thanks,

HarryP

fabian,

I'm glad you finally got it all cleaned up and N 360 installed and working! Keep it that way!

<<  But when I did the tasks e.g. registery clean up and disk optimization but the disk optimization still isn't working! >>

Honestly, I would never do a registry clean up without having a technical reason to do it! Just because the feature is there you do not have to use it!

As for defragging since you are on Windows 7 I would consider disabling the Norton utility and letting Windows 7 ddo it automatically in the background. The Windows 7 one seems to work very well since whenever I check up on it it says all my drives (and i have 8 logical drives on 2 physical drives) it say 0% fragmentation.

Defragging a hard drive is much less important than it used to be partly because modern hard drives have very large cache RAM installed that holds information between the computer and the disk and as this is continually being swapped it is defragged already when the system calls for it and partly because the newer file systems since FAT handle the files in the way they want them and actually can deliberately store files in fragments!

So now that you have your sytem set up and running smoothly ..... enjoy it until it screams at you to do something ... and even then think twice and if you don't understand what it wants you to do find out first!
