OK, this is pretty weird. I first noticed it several days ago after upgrading to NIS 2012. I've never seen it in previous versions, but can't say for sure it was never there since I don't often look that closely.
Anyway, this computer hadn't been left idle for any length of time for several days, so I turned it on and brought up the NIS Norton Tasks window, just to see what would run and how long each task would take. After a while, when several tasks had started, I noticed that task names would somewhat randomly be replaced with another task name. The tasks that duplicated, and those that disappeared, seemed to be random with no set pattern. That probably doesn't make a lot of sense, so I've attached a screenshot. In this example, while Insight Optimizer was running, the Insight Optimizer task disappeared and was replace by a second instance of Community Watch. Also, Norton Insight disappeared and was replace with a second instance of Automatic LiveUpdate. If I moved the cursor over the Norton Tasks window and clicked somewhere just to bring that window to the foreground, the list would eventually refresh itself and have a single line for each of the seven tasks.
On this particular computer it was installed as an upgrade over NIS 2011. I've never had any beta versions installed. No other security/virus programs are installed.
I also did a clean install of NIS 2012 on a different computer. I'll keep an eye on that one and see if this happens.
I would recommend that you do a uninstall and reinstall of NIS 2012. You can use this tool to do that process. The instructions on how to do it are right on that page.

Thanks Dialine. So did you reproduce the issue with an upgrade install or a clean install? Just wondering if I should go ahead and perform an uninstall/reinstall as suggested above, or if that would not fix the problem.
please run LiveUpdate manually, and reboot your machine if it asks you to do so. A little patch have been released for the 2012 prooducts. Maybe this issue have been solved with that as well. :)
I ran the liveupdate, rebooted, and confirmed that I had ver 19.1.1.3. Still seeing the same behavior. Since Symantec can reproduce this with a clean install, I doubt that the uninstall/reinstall route will help either. but I'll probably do it anyway just to clean things up. I think this particular computer hasn't had a clean, fresh install since around version 2010.
