Either worm.win32.netsky or an ugly malware problem ?

I have an XP (SP3) machine reportedly infected with the above listed worm except with a couple twists:  Regardless of which profile I use during Windows startup (admin or user) the result is the same:  immediate log-off and reboot.  Also, if I try to re-start in Safe Mode, I get an entire screen full of “multi-disc partition” text msgs before it locks up completely.  Perhaps its one of the malware variants? (Looking on several msg boards and on different sites, it seems as if there has been an influx of reported infections over the last four or five days of this same condition).  Wish I could tell you where it came from (I suspect the 16yr old son got hit with a bogus “warning” msg and took the bait but …)

Bottom line is that I wanted to use some of the scan/removal tools recommended on some of these forums for getting rid of this thing, but I can’t seem to even get to a point to load them first.  I can’t get past logging on and I can’t get to Safe Mode.  Any suggestions beyond just reformatting the drive completely?  What about trying to change the boot sequence - would using a Windows XP installation disk and the “repair” function work?  And then download those removal tools onto a thumbdrive or burn to CD for use?

Any thoughts or suggestions from a “guru” would be appreciated!  (BTW, I did have Norton loaded with the live update feature running).
