Email Error popup

Norton pops up a box with "Email error - Your email message was unable to be sent because the connection to the server was interrupted...... (see attached). Except 1) I did not send any messages 2) the from / to / subjects are all unknown to me 3) clicking on ok brings up another error (different from / to / subject and so on.

I have run Power eraser and Microsoft security scanner both show no virus. But after running them the error messages no longer appear  for about 5-8 days then the messages appear again. (this has now cycled 3 times) ... What is the cause and how do I permanently stop them without deleting Norton and using  different virus protection software.

Extra info.  First time this happened Microsoft security scanner showed the virus "Threat Detected: Ransom:PowerShell/Roduk but it cleaned it and subsequent scans after the messages reappeared have not found to be present any more.

When email error box is open PC appears to run slightly slower than normal.
