Email subject changed to [Norton AntiSpam]*subject*

I have found related topics here dating back to 2009, and yet this problem is NOT resolved.

This is a real annoyance.

  • Norton AntiSpam misidentifies some email as spam, changes the subject line to "[Norton AntiSpam]*subject*" and puts it in the Norton AntiSpam Folder.
  • Go to the Norton Tab in Outlook, select the email, and click "This is not Spam"
  • Norton restores the email to the Inbox, but does not fix or restore the original email subject content, leaving it marked as spam.

My system:

Windows 7 Professional 64 bit Service Pack 1

Microsoft Outlook 2010 version 14.0.6129.5000 (32-bit)

Norton 360 version 6.4.1.14

Thank you for the reply.

I am am aware that I can avoid this happening for future email from the same sender; Norton even provides a tool for this on the fly when one selects the email in the Norton AntiSpam folder and clicks the "This is not Spam" button.

However, with all due respect I firmly disagree that there is no solution to the issue.

I propose that the Norton AntiSpam software NOT change the subject line and prefix it with [Norton AntiSpam] to begin with!

After all, the email that is determined to be spam by the software is moved into the Norton AntiSpam folder to isolate it, is it not?

What is the added value of changing the subject line to include [Norton AntiSpam] ?

The [Norton AntiSpam] notation is what marks the message for placement by the email program into the AntiSpam Folder.  A message rule exists in your email client to send any message with [Norton AntiSpam] in the subject line to that folder instead of the inbox.  Without some method of identifying suspected spam to the email client with a universal marker like this, you would need to create a separate rule for every possible spammy word, subject, message body or sender.  True, Norton could use a different marker, but it would still have to be something distinctive enough to make it distinguishable from the subject.

Here is how that rule appears in Outlook Express:

Thank you for clarifying how the Norton software works; I stand corrected.

I had assumed that Norton AS software was actually inegrated with Outlook somehow, and that it functioned similar to Outlook's Junk E-mail feature which does not change the subject line of the email that is moved into the Junk E-mail folder.

The solution to this annoying Norton problem is to Disable Norton AntiSpam in Outlook and just use Outlook's Junk E-mail feature.
