Not sure where this belongs since it applies to all products. Hopefully a moderator will find the correct location for it.
It would be helpful if the download locations, accessed via Norton Update Centre, showed, next to the applicable product, the build number that you are about to download. It is not until after you have downloaded it and checked its properties (or installed it) that you can ascertain the build number of the file you have just downloaded.
I think that recently, given all of the confusion over the release dates for patches to NIS2009 and Norton 360 V3, a lot of people are downloading and installing files from NUC hoping that they have got an updated version to fix their problems and we are seeing the results in the forums of failed installs, uninstalls and Norton Removal Tool removals that didn't go quite right.

Great idea md !!
Thanks mo. The main reason behind the post is that I had a guy PM me who had N360 build 3.5.2.10 working pefectly well on his Win 7PC. He saw the post about the .11 patch being available but didn't get it via liveupdate so he went to NUC dowloaded and installed N360 and ended up back at 3.0.0.135 and now has issues.
I completely agree with mo. Your idea rocks, mdturner ;-))
I guess they're unleashing (I so love that word...!) the patch via LiveUpdate and want to ensure that it won't trigger any issues before updating the installers on the Symantec server.
Really nice idea. It would great if the release date of the build and the link to release notes listing the changes with the latest build is added.

This is a terrific idea, and I like Vinod’s added touch. All too often sites don’t make clear what version of software is about to be downloaded and the results can range from a minor waste of time to the sort of really irritating results that MD noted.
This is another example of what happens when there isn't a clear indication of what you are about to download. You could say the user is wrong to assume but if there was clarity then assumption would not be necessay.
This is a new post I copied from SGFC.
"This is total crap. I just downloaded setup.exe from Norton Update Center. I figured it'd give me 16.7.2.11 and what did it give me? 16.5.0.135 Now not only do I not have the latest build. I have an older version that has no support for Firefox.
Symantec needs to come up with a better way to release build updates."
As of right now (5th September 2009), the following versions of NAV/NIS 2009 (US) are available at the following locations:
Norton Update Center: version 16.5.0.135 for NIS/16.5.0.134 for NAV
Downloading the latest version of NIS for multi-user packs: version 16.5.0.135
Downloading the latest version of NAV for multi-user packs: version 16.5.0.134
Direct link (NIS): 16.5.0.135
Direct link (NAV): 16.5.0.134
Patch 16.7.2.10: withdrawn. See this thread.
Patch 16.7.2.11: being pushed out via LiveUpdate, no fixed date for release in Update Center(s). See this thread.
If you want to check your downloaded version of NAV/NIS/Norton 360 after downloading it from the Symantec website, right-click on the downloaded icon, go to "Properties", then "Details" and check the build number under "file version".

It appears that the 16.7.2.11 and 3.5.2.11 has also been Pulled.

Sigh. Any official confirmation of this?

The Server Failure. It appears that when symantec were Releasing Enhancements to the 16.7.2.11 Update, it crashed the Server.

Indeed; but so far, no Symantec employee has officially confirmed that the patch has been withdrawn. Let's wait and see. In the meantime, let us not deviate from the original thread topic - which is not about which patch has been withdrawn, but about better communication of the download locations.

Here is yet another example of the iissue
"I'm really disappointed with Symantec at this point. I had 16.7.2.10 after reading the announcement about 16.7.2.11 I figured I'd try the Norton Update Center route. Sadly to say I ended up with 16.5.0.135 I'm not very impressed. How long does it take? I had no issues with 16.7.2.10 everything was fine. Now I have to run Firefox without any Symantec add-ons."
You could say "Serves him right" but we do need this information clearly displayed in the NUC to stop this happening.
