Equifax Data Breach: Beware of Fake Settlement Websites
https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/blog/2019/07/equifax-data-breach-beware-fake-settlement-websites
Collect? Why? There are so many people trying to collect that its not worth the effort. Don't waste your time with attempting to collect anything from these people. Why? They make it extremely difficult to collect, doing so by totally wiping away the issue at hand. THEY didn't protect our data, you must prove you were directly affected. Simply a whitewash by yet another corporate giant. The joke of the day is: Free credit monitoring by the very people who allowed your information to be stolen in the first place? LMBO!! I'm going to get right on that one. Same as with the OPM breech in 2014, they got everything except my fingerprints from military service. In a nutshell. As long as governments continue to allow fines and not put people in prison for gross negligence, and, its just that, these breeches will continue. They will continue collecting our data and making a killing doing so. Its all about their bottom line don't ya know.
Cheers

If you could forget the $125 from Equifax and just take the free credit monitoring, that would be great – FTC
Not enough settlement cash to go around, sighs watchdogThe sad truth is that the FTC pulls this kind of nonsense all the time: putting out massively inflated settlement figures to make it look like it is doing a great job when in fact it is massively constrained in resources and by the law to actually do anything that would cause business to think twice. There is a reason we at The Reg refer to it as "the toothless watchdog."
