Error 0x80004005 and 8504, 5 on NIS 2011

This afternoon, I let my computer idle for around 15 minutes. I guess norton was performing some background tasks when I came back, so I decided to let it finish. After over an hour of waiting and listening to my disk pulse every other second, I opened up the norton control panel, where the application proceeded to hang for a while until I had to close it.

That's when I got this message from Symantec support stating that norton had encountered an error. I ran the norton error scanner they provided, which didn't detect any problems with the program itself. At this point, the norton icon had disappeared entirely from the taskbar.

I ended up rebooting my machine and everything seems to be working just fine, but I'm still a little concerned over whether or not my copy of norton has been damaged.

Hi! New_ton,

Can you please provide the following information: What  version of Windows and Installed Service Pack (i.e.; Windows XP SP3, Windows Vista SP2, Windows 7 SP1) are you using?  What Norton Product (i.e.; NIS 2011, NAV 2011, or N360) are you using?  This information will allow us to better help you with your issue.

Hi tech,

I am currently using Windows 7 home premium (no service pack) and Norton Internet Security 2011.

Hi! New_ton,

Please run Windows Update on your Windows 7 system to download and install Service Pack 1; also download/install any other critical or important updates.  Go to your system manufacturer's website and make you've downloaded and installed all of the latest driver files for your system.

After you've completed this go to Start>Computer>Right Click drive C: then select Properties>Tools Tab>Defragment Now. In the resulting program window select to Defragment the drive; when the process completes close all of the open windows and restart your computer.

Open NIS 2011 and run LiveUpdate until no updates are found then run a full scan on your system.

Go to http://www.almico.com/sfdownload.php click on the words SpeedFan 4.43 to start the download of SpeedFan opt to save the installer file once downloaded select the option to run the installer.  Once installed open SpeedFan, close the two information boxes and let the system set idle for an hour check the temps frequently and note whether a certain temp is constantly high also monitor the CPU activity take note if the activity is sustained at a certain level and for how long. Report this information back here.

I checked for updates, installed Service Pack 1, and ran a full scan which came back clean. I tried to run a disk defrag, but instead I was met with a message saying:

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Disk defragmenter was scheduled using another program."

"Disk defragmenter is currently using customized settings created by another program. Before you can modify the schedule, you must remove the customized settings."

"Remove settings" "Cancel"

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As for speedfan. Is it completely compatable with SP1? Because I know some of these tools tend to crash with the newer updates.

Hi! New_Ton,

Sorry, for the delay in response.  I am currently using SpeedFan on a Windows 7 SP1 for work without any conflicts. Do you have a product like Norton Utilities installed on your system?  Is your system part of a domain workgroup? When you installed NIS did you run the installer as an Administator?  I am going to consult with another tech to see if they have anything that can be done. Have you recieved the 18.6.0.29 update? If so, do you still have this issue?

Speedfan needs to be run as administrator as well or you don't get access to the data properly.

HI! Delphinium,

Thanks, for catching that one.  I forgot about that. :)

Well I just received an 8504, 101 error right out of the blue, now norton won't even start. Rebooting didn't help, so it looks I'm going to have completely reinstall and follow the steps on the one click support page.

Since I have multiple trojans\items quarantined, what will happen to them once I uninstall? Will they be removed with Norton, or will they stay on my computer? I really don't like being this vunerable.
