Refer to the solution from the following Symantec KB:

Thanks Yogesh,
Support / Search on the Norton Support Web SIte doesn't know about it .....
The OP might have to uninstall and reinstall the Norton as well? If so can he preserve the balance of the trial if it's still in that status?
If you are running IE9 please switch to compatibility mode so we can see your text .......
Sure, Hugh.
If the problem persists, better try uninstall using Norton Removal Tool and then reinstall.

I have this same error occuring on Windows Vista Home Premium (64-bit) with Service Pack 2. I have been using Norton 2011 for several months now without any issues. My virus definitions are automatically updated.
My Windows updates are not set to automatically update because I like to choose which updates I want installed. For instance, I do not have MS Office products, so no need to install updates.
My Windows Defender is turned off and has been all along because I use Norton 2011. No other security software is installed.
Something has changed in Norton 2011 then - because I haven't installed any software (that I know of) since 5/15/2011, which was a Mozilla FireFox update, Adobe Flash Player 10 ActiveX, and Compatibility Pack for Office 2007 (which will not uninstall because it can't find a key because I don't have MS Office installed. Compatibility Pack must have slipped thru my beady little eyes.)
I shouldn't have to re-install Norton 2011 to fix this issue. It was working fine until 3 days ago - now it isn't working - has to be a Norton issue.
Any other ideas besides uninstalling / reinstalling Norton 2011?
Thank you,
Darcy
