Error 3042, 1

I have had a Norton product installed on my computer for a few years.  It was working fine for about a the entire time I have had it, but then it started to have errors like the error 3042, 1.  I looked up what to do if this happens on Norton community, and I reinstalled it, and I got the same thing again.  No matter how many times I reinstalled it, the same thing kept happening.  I have done many power erases and full system scans, but still no solution.  I also tried Norton Autofix, and it apparently fixed it, and it was fine, but when I booted my computer the next day, I had the error again.  I had installed it on another computer after this one (with Windows 8), and it worked fine.  I have a Dell XPS 410 with Windows XP.  Is it because my OS is outdated?  Would an upgrade to Windows 7 or 8 help?
