I downloaded and ran the Norton Remove & Reinstall Tool but didn't work, so had to do it manually. After I did that reinstalled Norton AntiVirus 2012 and still got same error.
Thanks for alerting us to this error. I've sent you both a private message (the yellow envelope in the upper right-hand corner of the forums) requesting additional technical information.
Can you both explain in a bit more detail the circumstances that you see this issue? Is it when you launch NIS? When you navigate to a certain part of the product? When you launch another program? Any details would greatly help us try to reproduce the problem. Thanks.
NAV usually loads when I log in, and today I logged in and see that NAV icon is not at the bottom right corner where it usually is. So I try to run NAV as admin by right clicking the NAV short-cut on my desktop. Few minutes later I get an error message.
Working perfectly fine at shutdown last night, error message came up when it tried to open this morning. Autofix did nothing, remove and reinstall tool told me to do it manually, (the normal removal tool gives me page not found errors). Uninstalled and reinstalled and got the blue screen on reboot. Had to system restore to 2 days ago and now I have no norton product (I see it but it says it's not there)
About an hour ago, my Norton Internet Security 2012 alerted me, saying that my computer was at risk and that my Sonar Advance Protection was turned off, I tried to fix it using the "Auto Fix" but when I restarted my computer to see if it worked, Norton would'n't even start up or open. I kept on getting Error "8506,422" messages, but when Norton tried to fix it, it always ended up failing.
Afterwards, I tried to use the Norton Remove and Reinstall Tool but it didn't work and told me:
"Could not gather details about the installed layout or license. Click Here for information on how to uninstall and reinstall your Norton product manually." And if I double-click on the icon on my desktop, I would get a popup telling me that it is not a valid Win32 application.
So now, I have no idea on what to do to resolve this issue, any help is appreciated.
I have the same problem, unresolved by following the recommended Norton Removal and Reinstall tool. Preferring to avoid the drudgery of a manual removal / reinstall which seems to be an all-too-common feature of Norton products these days, I successfully restored from a recent Acronis image.
I ran LiveUpdate to update virus definitions, all seemed fine for about 10 minutes then I got the 8506.422 error again - I can't link it to any particular activity on the machine or action taken by me.
What does the error indicate? And is my machine still protected (although the Norton icon has disappeared from the taskbar)?
I also had this happen right after the 10 microsoft updates 08/14/2012. After rebooting after updates my norton icon was gone. This is a conflict between the os updates and norton. I reloaded norton 2012 Internet Sec from website. still got error, couldn't get online. I used Norton removel tool before each try. Reloaded from CD same error. Started getting blue screen just after rebooting and norton loaded. Had to boot into safe mode and do system restore. Than everything ran without problem with norton but without updates.
I had ran mem and ckdsk, all cpu dia without error.
I then removed norton, loaded Charters F- Secure, loaded 10 microsoft updates everything now runs ok, I won't be reloading Norton's for a while.
I'm running Vista 32bit fully updated on XPS-420, Norton was fully updated.
i had the same problem on my laptop. I am running on vista. After installing the latest version, I can't even connect to internet on browser although i can ping them. I have tried un-installing and installing for many times.....
I'm not convinced the problem is caused by the Windows update files - the only one I've downloaded and installed is the Windows Malicious Software Removal tool.
I've just booted up the affected laptop today, got the same 8056,422 message more or less straight after the desktop appeared, with "Waiting for Norton Internet Secrutiy to initialise" temporarily indicated in the message box.
I have two other machines at home running the same OS (Win XP) and sofware - so far the other two haven't been affected (fingers crossed), even though one of them has indeed automatically downloaded and installed yesterday's Windows update files.
I keep getting error 8506,422. I have reinstalled Norton 4 times now. I also did a service call 04438803 and the gentleman on the phone also reinstalled, but when he did it I got a Blue screen, that said a resent software install was bad. The gentleman on the phone said that mt XP was bad and I had to reinstall. I did and after 2 days of reinstalling all my software and then reinstalling Norton it did the same thing. It is fine till it updates and then the 8506,422 starts all over again.
I had the same experience, beginning on the evening of Aug. 14. Things got worse every time I uninstalled and re-installed NIS 2012 (items disappeared and I could not access the internet the last couple of tries). I was unsuccessful every time, no matter what method I used - including using my cd to re-install. Now my computer is a complete unusable mess. Most of my programs have disappeared and I can't access anything but documents and music. There are likely many others out there with the same problem who haven't bothered to post. What's going on, Symantec?
I don't think the problem is related to the Windows Updates either. I updated 3 PCs this week to NIS/NAV 19.8.0.14 and all the MS critical updates and have not had this error on any of them:
WinXP Home SP3 x86 (NAV)
WinXP Pro SP3 x86 (NIS)
Win7 Pro SP1 x64 (NIS)
I know this doesn't help those users who are experiencing the error, but I think there must be another common denominator at work.
I have NIS 2012 and have had the same problem/symptoms as Ds760 ever since version 19.8.0.14 was installed via Live Update. After the first time I re-installed Norton, I lost internet connectivity and continue not to have it on that computer (I'm typing this on a different computer). I've un-installed and reinstalled three times but am still getting the same error 8506, 422 shortly after I reboot. There is no Norton icon in the system tray and trying to start Norton via the menu just causes the same error to appear. Windows Security Center says the Norton Firewall and Antivirus are active, however. My affected computer has Windows XP, SP 3 and Internet Explorer 8. I hope somebody finds a solution to this soon so I can get my internet connectivity back. I do have connectivity when I uninstall Norton and don't reinstall it, but I don't want to run unprotected.
My other two computers received update 19.8.0.14 and are not having any problems with it so far. One has Windows XP, SP 3 and IE 8, the other has Windows 7, IE 8.
By any chance have any of the XP systems had another anti-virus program installed but removed before Norton was installed?
Two friends had similar issues, but with different apparent root causes.
The first one was running NIS on a Windows XP system and had the same error message. The uninstall/remove/reinstall of NIS didn't work. Somewhere back in the past the user had been running the AVG free version and uninstalled it using the control panel. After rooting around in the directories, there were still leftover traces of AVG in there. Ran the AVG removal tool for the right free version a couple of times, restarted, reinstalled NIS, and that resolved the issue.
Same error on the second machine, also a Windows XP system. Problem was easier to identify here, he was also running Microsoft Securitiy Essentials. Uninstalled MSE, issues fixed.
It's not stated in any of the posts here whether there's another real-time AV running, or if another AV had been used in the past. If so, one of those could be the culprit.
Most AV products, I note, when uninstalled using the menu uninstall feature or control panel, leave some slop behind, if nothing else the product settings. You can usually find the remnants in a directory under C:/PROGRAM FILES
I'm having the same problems reported in this thread. A couple of observations....
I thought the 19.8.0.14 upgrade required the user to run Live Update manually...... I did not... and based on the history I think it got delivered automatically and possibly in two seperate LU executions. I was never prompted to reboot (although I have for other reasons.... I didn't even realize anything changed until I couldnt open the ui )
Since the upgrade, I also see significantly more "Norton Error Submissions"... within each report, it states that the product version is 19.7.1.5 yet Support>About shows 19.8.0.14. Hmmmm.
