Error Collection - Huge slowdown!

Hi There,

I've just started up my pc, and inserted a Asus mini wi-fi (USB) adapter (this one) into one of the USB ports - this caused a massive slow down of my system, and upon opening Task Manager, I was greeted with this:

Upon restarting, none of these processes reappeared, but my pc is still slowed down significantly, and when I order processes by disk access, Norton is at the top... it stays this way for about 10 min, and then finally settles down. I have yet to do a second restart, so I am unsure if this will happen again.

I don't know what has suddenly happened, or if it is related to the wi-fi adapter I've plugged in, but it's making my pc almost unusable :/

Motherboard (in case the USB Driver is relevant - I plugged it into a 2.0 port)

Your computer might be having problems connecting to the Symantec servers and submitting Norton Community Watch (NCW) error reports - see Dave20's thread here for background information. If the problem persists, try disabling Norton Community Watch (Settings | General | Other Settings) to see if this stops the Symantec Error Reporting submissions.

I would also suggest that you run an an online diagnostic from the NIS menu at Support | Get Support to see if AutoFix can find a problem with your NIS installation.  Detailed information about your Norton Error Reporting and Norton Community Watch submissions can be found in your NIS security history (History | Show | Submissions and Errors).  The Last Run date and completion status of your latest NCW submission can be found in your Norton Tasks window at Performance | Norton Tasks.

If your system continues to run slowly after your next re-boot, please see Cico66's thread here about LAN and WiFi connection problems with NIS 21.x and Win 8.x on Asus computers.  Many users have found that disabling the Asus Network iControl and/or Applian Network Monitor utilities improved system performance.

I too occasionally see the multiple Error Reporting tasks listed in Task Manager.  Interestingly it only occurs on the system running with NIS v21 - I've yet to see it happen on any of our NIS v20 systems.

Thanks for the info :) I've disabled the error reporting in the mean time, and the problem doesn't seem to have occured again - It may very well be as you say, that NIS couldn't connect to the Symantec servers. However, even if this is the case, it's reaction to a lack of a connection is definitely not a very good one!

Glad to hear things are looking better with Norton Community Watch disabled.  If the problem returns just post back and let us know.

 

One other thing I should mention.  I checked the specs here for your Asus USB-N10 Wireless N-150 USB adapter and it supports up to Win 7, but I don't see any mention of Win 8.  The user manual doesn't look like it's been updated since May 2010 so you might want to check with Asus customer service to see if your USB WiFi adapter is compatible with Win 8.1 Pro.

Thanks for checking that out. While it may be true that there is no "official" support for windows 8.1, it is a generic Wireless-N adapter and is correctly identified by Windows' default driver - and otherwise works flawlessly.

I may have "spoken" too soon when I clicked the "solved" button, as the same thing just occured when I plugged in my lexmark x2600 (it is supported - just ctrl-f for "2600"). So, for the time being, I have disabled Norton.

Even if this is a compatibility issue between Windows and the device(s), ideally this shouldn't cause Norton to go all funky - Rootkits often install driver-like software to hide themselves, so this may be the area that this is occuring in (only seems to happen when new drivers for previously not installed hardware are installed) and that this sort of software is complicated, so intuitively it would be difficult to track down why the slow down occurs. It may not even be entirely caused by Norton - However, I think it's worth mentioning and worth the devs keeping in mind. Perhaps it's some underlying change to 8.1 versus 8, as I've never experienced this issue before! Perhaps it's even something I did!

All I know is, as a dev myself, if I saw my product doing the above (^Screenshot), I wouldn't be happy.

I thought that solution sounded too good to be true:smileyvery-happy:.  As the original poster for the thread, you can click the Options link in the top right corner of message # 2 and unmark that message as the solution as long as you're logged in to the forum.

 

I'm still using NIS 20.x, but my understanding is that Symantec Error Reporting (symerr.exe) is a shared component of Norton Community Watch (NCW).  I'm surprised that disabling NCW did not stop (or at least reduce) the submissions, since the amount of data gather for error reporting is controlled by the Detailed Data Error Collection sub-setting - see Symantec employee hnattai's post here about disabling error reporting in Norton for Mac.  If you temporarily turn NCW On in your settings, change Detailed Data Error Collection to Never,  and then turn NCW Off again does this stop the submissions?

I also wonder if you might have some error reports stuck in a queue and still pending submission even though you've disabled NCW.  You could try a forced manual NWC submission from the Norton Tasks window (Performance | Norton Tasks) by clicking the yellow run arrow next to the NCW task to see if this sends any queued reports.  I always have NCW disabled so that's why my status is "Not enrolled" in my screenshot.

Since avjohnnie reported seeing the same submissions in Task Manager with NIS 21.x in message # 3 I'm hoping that this isn't caused by hidden malware on your system.  This could be a bug in NIS 21.x, but do you have any other antivirus software on your system that might be conflicting with NIS?  Orphaned registry and disk files from old AV software (even older version of NIS) can sometimes cause a conflict with NIS even after it's uninstalled and a deep wipe with the manufacturer's cleanup tool (e.g., Norton Removal Tool, McAfee Consumer Product Removal Tool, etc) is sometimes required to get NIS working correctly.  We can provide detailed instructions for a clean wipe if you want to pursue this.

...and further to your comment about drivers, please see hvgsel's post here about driver issues some users are experiencing when they upgrade from Win 8 to Win 8.1.  It sounds like a common problem and could be related to the number of error reports NIS is submitting back to Symantec.

 

Your NIS security history (History | Show | Submissions and Errors | Norton Error Reporting) might provide some detailed information on what is triggering these submissions.

 

Late EDIT:

 

Errors logged in your Windows Event Viewer might also provide some useful information if your Win 8.1 OS is having problems loading hardware drivers at boot-up or when you plug in a printer, etc.
