You will need to download some files to fix this error. The First step is to edit this file:

C:\ProgramData\Symantec\LiveUpdate\Log.LiveUpdate

You will need to go to the very bottom of the file and then search up to find the string “http:” You are looking for the patch file used to update your copy of Ghost. Copy this line into your browser and download this file. It will have a name something like the following:

http://liveupdate.symantecliveupdate.com/1250526122jtun_norton_ghost_14.0_sp5_patch.zip.full

<!-- [if gte vml 1]>

<![endif] →

<!-- [if gte vml 1]>

<![endif] →

You will also need to create the file: Fix_SymSnapService_Vista.reg which has the following contents:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\SymSnapService]

“Type”=dword:00000010

The last file you will need is a copy of the LiveUpdate installer 3.5 or later. And which can be found at:

ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/liveupdate/3.5/lusetup.exe

<!-- [if gte vml 1]>

<![endif] →

<!-- [if gte vml 1]>

<![endif] →

 Merge/run: Fix_SymSnapService_Vista.reg

I was told this change makes sure the Snap Service keeps running so Ghost can be patched.

Make Sure the Snap Service is running.<!-- [if gte vml 1]>

<![endif] →

Apply the patch SP5 to your copy of Ghost

Restart your Computer

<!-- [if gte vml 1]>

<![endif] →

<!-- [if gte vml 1]>

<![endif] →

OK, Make sure the SnapService is running…

<!-- [if gte vml 1]>

<![endif] →

<!-- [if gte vml 1]>

<![endif] →

SymSnapService if you are using a 64-bit OS and the location string should say:

“C:\Program Files (x86)\Norton Ghost\Shared\Drivers\SymSnapServicex64.exe”

You will have to use: C:\Windows\System32\regedt32.exe and fix the location string. Remember to use Computer Quotes not “”

To fix the problem, look for the following string:

“C:\Program Files\Norton Ghost\Shared\Drivers\SymSnapService.exe”

And replace it with this one.

“C:\Program Files (x86)\Norton Ghost\Shared\Drivers\SymSnapServicex64.exe”

On my Desktop I found two of these strings. On my Laptop I only found one.

<!-- [if gte vml 1]>

<![endif] →

OK, now try to start a Backup with Ghost 14.

Did everything work ok?

Good you’re done.
