Error message 1002,1; "compromised integrity"

I left my computer on through the night and this morning I found a pop-up message that (not the exact wording) contained “Symantec…Compromised Integrity” and “Scans have been compromised.”  I was in shock and forgot to at least prtsc.  So then I tried to open Norton itself; it started smoothly, but after I selected the program to run a scan, my computer started to freeze.  I could open other windows and such, but within the Norton program, I could not do anything.  So I did crtl-alt-del in order to shut the program down and my other windows (maybe this was a mistake in retrospect?) and quickly restart the computer.

Now I have made three restarts because the error message 1002,1 states that Norton/Symantec cannot start because of a necessary file that’s not there(?).  But the thing is that I have read other messages pertaining to this error and they seem to be new or current installations.  I installed this software almost a year (not yet) ago.  So I am getting a little antsy about the whole compromised idea and me not having any firewall up right now.
So I guess my main question is should I still follow the “What if this doesn’t work” even though the mainstay of the others that have this problem seem to actually have fresh/installed software?
Help and advice is greatly appreciated!

Hi,

This is really interesting. This issue usually comes up with installation or right after the installation. Which Norton product do you use and which version. You can see the version number by clicking Help and Support > About.

Also, there was a fix tool released for this issue with Norton 2009 products. I hope the fix tool will be good enough if you are using Norton 360 Version 3.0. Run the fix tool from the ffollowing Knowledge base article.

Vineeth--

Let us know the Norton product name & version which you use and also, your Operating System.

You are in good hands with Yogesh and Vineeth.  If you want some reassurance about possible malware, you could give us a GMER log to check.

Scan only

Hi!

Sorry that it has taken me so long to reply!  Thank you all for your time and energy!

Everything was solved thanks to a chat with Symantec support and some mysterious happenings.

Soon after I left a message on the 360 board, I restarted my computer once more and then logged in through another account.  Through this second account, I was able to open and access the antivirus system.  Near the top read bold red lettering that had something like "Corrupted Files....Contact Symantec Support immediately."  When I looked at the list of errors, I had no understanding whatsoever and the list had like 17 garbled descriptive messages!

A couple minutes into the chat, the Norton program kind of restarted on its own and then the facade went back to normal.  When the Superman/woman Support Tech logged onto my computer, they were probably thinking I was playing some kind of game with them--but I really wasn't!  Anyway, within the next hour, the Superperson decided that there must have been some kind of inherent problem; so they helped me to reinstall the program and everything seems to be working efficiently once again.

I am so thankful for the support on hand--whoever they are I'm just so relieved and grateful.  And I'm really glad for your help, too!  This is such a great forum for computer brain-less people like me! :)

To Vineeth:  I had a 2008 Norton 360 v2.0; I've been upgraded now to 3.0.

To Yogesh_Mohan: I unfortunately use Win Vista...

and what is a GMER log?

I am glad everything worked out for you and that all is well.  I have always found Symantec support to be extremely helpful as well.

Be very glad that you don't need to know what a GMER scan is for. :smileywink:

Drop in any time you have a problem or a question.

Best wishes.
