Error message loop "A problem has occurred that needs our attention"

I purchased the latest editon of Norton 360 and installed it on my 2007 Compaq Presario  with no issues. Then Microsoft had one of those updates. Afterward, my Norton won't work. I've tried everything. Uninstalling, reinstalling -- following the info listed on the web pages referred to below. Nothing happens. It is dead. I have dug a hole in the back yard and will lay my copy of Norton to rest soon. But one last try here.

Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks in advance!

Welcome to the Norton Community

Before you erect a Norton R.I.P. sign in the back yard we can try some things.

When you uninstalled did you just do so with add/remove from the control panel?

Thanks, MD! :robothappy:

I did do that, but then I downloaded "buDump" to try and remove everything. Next, I used the "Norton Removal Tool" -- but all to no avail.

I have the grave marker picked out for my Norton 360 with the "born" date but am holding off to official call the time of death. :robotwink:

(Side note of interest... this reCAPTCHA is amusing. My phrase was "tactial $602,995,000" -- hopefully I'll be winning the lottery this week with some tactics. :-)

Since you've been down the Norton Removal Tool route and reinstallation the best option, for now, is to do a System restore to before you did the MS updates and then, at least, you should be able to get 360 working again and get your system protected before we try to figure "which update killed 360" (new movie title) and why.

Thanks again for your continued help, MD!

I'm a Mac guy -- this is my wife's PC so forgive my ignornace in my next question. Is a "system restore" when you completely reinstall the Windows OS, or is it like a "rollback" (no, not the Wal-Mart kind -- more like Apple's "Time Capsual" where you can go back to older versions of what you had on your machine).

I don't know an easy way to do either -- so if there is an Easy Button (why am I suddenly plugging Staples?) please let me know! :)

No problem. Go to Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore

You want to choose a restore date before the time you installed the MS updates. This is going to roll back any changes made to the system since the date you choose. Any data changes will not be affected e.g. Documents you have saved. If in doubt, do nothing and post again.

MD, you rock! That did the trick.

Though some feedback for the product team. After following MD's excellent advice "Go to Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore" ... I inserted the disk and it asked for the product key again, which I entered, then the message I got was that Norton 360 was installing.

After a long while, I checked back (because the process is slow) and the message said I needed to restart my PC. Which I did. Afterward, there was no sign of Norton on my PC at all. It was totally gone! Maybe that was the intent, to clean all the corrupt files, etc. However, I didn't get any notification this was occuring.

So, I restarted it once more. Then I put in the Norton 360 DVD, was asked once again to enter the product key (which I did), and this time it installed correctly.

Anyway, thanks again MD!

Hi Dieds,

Woke up this morning to the good news that I don't need my black tie today:smileysurprised: Glad to hear that your system is up and running and that you managed to get over the funny issue with reinstalling 360. Window isn't so bad after all:smileywink:

Take care.
